It's appropriate this is on apartment therapy; I apply the same principle to my computer as I do to my home: if I haven't used it in a certain amount of time, I get rid of it. The cost of storing stuff is equally high digitally as it is at home. This translates into a 128 GB drive, despite the fact that I do 2d and 3d design.

"There is a real benefit to users who upgrade regularly" - really? there is such little difference over one year that the vast majority of users wouldn't notice the difference. 0.2" larger screen; 2Mhz faster processor...

"these devices keep their value slightly longer than the ones with lower spec, allowing you to benefit in the long run." - technology is the fastest depreciating product out there...the more money up front, the more goes to depreciation.

In my opinion, the physical technology has basically been perfected (e.g. iPad - the screen is as crisp as text-on-paper and its instant-fast) so that the only major difference users will notice are software upgrades (something android needs to work on...). This allows users to hold onto existing hardware longer, reducing the waste and manufacturing impacts that go along with these excessive upgrade cycles.

I don't mind the context; the style contrast is start, but the scale is kept the same, so I think it works. However, the big fail is the driveway! The other houses don't have that, and it looks and functions much better. Nice interior space though.

How narrow of a house do you think you could live in?

Google docs is great and if you use full screen in your browser (e.g. google chrome) AND full screen in google docs (view > full screen) it's a full screen writing environment with no distractions, that's free!

The 21st Century Museum is absolutely incredible. It's based on the concepts of a park, and when I visited I felt it definitely met that goal. It also contains very interactive and creative modern works, not traditional forms, which I really enjoyed.

If you ever visit Japan, I recommend the city of Kanazawa, where the 21st Century Museum is located. There's a beautiful park nearby the museum, as well as a samurai district and geisha district that are both beautiful. The city also has great shopping. The city combines both modern and ancient Japan in a neat, compact package.

I'm searching for a cool messenger bag too, and found 'the property of...' bag in Japan. It's a designer brand from Singapore and the fabric seems durable with a nice combination of leather and thick canvas (maybe not canvas?). The asymmetrical design is different and it's practical too, with lots of pockets with closures.

Great tips!

Also, use the right appliance for the job: e.g. use a toaster oven if at all possible as opposed to the full size oven.

And, keep your fridge full, even if it means with jugs of water. Solids and liquids have a higher thermal mass than air, so when you open the door, less cold air escapes.

Finally, turn off the ice maker in your freezer.

Got em right too, although none of them were what I would think would be the quintessential living room for each city. And I agree - this would be a really cool art piece - living rooms from around the world, with hundreds of cities!

And midwestdiva, we appreciate your honesty!

That's so nice of you to think of us Canadians. Thanks!

And I would fully support an AT Canadiana, but I agree - there'd have to be an east and west version please.

Hi Regina,

I was wondering if you (or any AT readers) had any advice for someone looking into LEED Certification - any good websites, study tips, etc.

Thanks so much in advance, and I wish you the best of luck on your exam!

Fried egg on a homemade cheeseburger! Just throw a frying pan on the BBQ beside your patty, and you're good to go. And put some hot sauce on it to kick it up a notch.

Jeez, I think I've been watching too much Food Network...

Incredibly ingenious to reuse material from another project that would have otherwise gone to waste. Kudos for taking the extra energy and designing to accomplish such a wonderful result from highway construction material.

PS. I remember reading an article on this house in Dwell a while back; what happened to the pool table in the kitchen?

I just painted my bedroom the almost identical colour to the first one, and I absolutely love it! It had been a lighter green, but I wanted it to feel smaller, cozier, and that's exactly the effect I've attained. It also makes emphasizes the wide white molding, especially around the window. To keep it from looking drab, I have white dressers and a white bedspread, and I find the white ceiling helps with that too. I also found that having dark colours act as a relatively neutral background, similar to a white or slightly off-white would. It'd be especially neat to mix that concept throughout an entire house.

Hi, when I was a kid we had a 2 fireplaces that had dampers, one woodburning and one gas. Despite the dampers, they both let out a lot of heat, especially when we had to leave the damper open overnight because we'd had a fire going.

My dad had a large piece of glass cut to fit the opening of each fireplace and stuck a strip of magnet around the entire edge. When it was time to retire, he simply put the glass over the fireplace, essentially sealing it from drafts.

Hope this helps!

It snowed here in Vancouver the other day, and I decided to go out and do some christmas shopping. Strolling along 4th Ave, with the snow gently falling among bustling shoppers brought a smile to my face; they seemed unfazed by the white stuff, fully intent on finding gifts for others. Then walking back to my place, a walk I have completed in balmy summer weather with greenery everywhere, to being surrounded by oranges, reds and yellows of chilly fall, and now finally walking in a crisp white winter wonderland. On top of that, neighbours shoveling snow from their sidewalk portion, with that indistinguishable snow-shovel-on-pavement-sound, really could have converted any Scrooge. I couldn't help but quietly sing 'It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year'...
