As a design student working a full time office job, I find shows like this pretty depressing. They really do make me feel like I'll never make any money as a designer unless I suck up to insane(ly) wealthy people. I guess I didn't realize when I enrolled three years ago that schmoozing is a (too) big part of the job, and that talent means nothing when you have boatloads of money and a huge personality.

Howdy! I'm one class away from my Associates in ID. I have a couple of small residential projects under my belt and am open to working with Chicago home-owners. I specialize in low-budget solutions and DIY as much as my skills will allow. Please drop me a line at jim@jimdandychicago.com if you'd like to learn more.

I like this a lot, but the assembly makes me concerned for lateral stability. How do you keep the structure rigid without any sort of cross-bracing? I would think that a little shove on either end would be all it takes to collapse this, i.e. the vertical supports aren't very thick, so wouldn't the screws easily break through the sides of the verticals? But I do love the look!

Agreed on the thrift and paint approach. Thybony carries a brand called Modern Masters (i think? saw in store, looking on website) with a steel finish in their catalogue. The really cool thing is they also sell a reactive agent that compliments the product - you can rust the finish to your liking. Not cheap at around $60/gallon, but still cheaper than buying the real deal furniture and looks amazing.

Keep an eye on the sample sales at the Merchandise Mart. Poke around on their website and you can get added to the email lists, I believe. There are seperate sales for the Design Center and for Gift & Home. Worth the patience - I scored a $650 coffee table for around $200.

Frannybee - really good point about the potential for clothing to fade in the direct sunlight.

I think the whole idea is fairly resourceful, but it just looks way too cluttered for me. I do like the brown and white boxes, but I would just as soon buy some plywood and hinges to cover that unit with some doors.

Can anybody comment on the durability of painted countertops? I live in an apartment with a HORRIBLE kitchen - forest green laminate countertop, which was most likely a remnant - YUCK! I'm looking for a cheap/quick fix here and buying new a countertop isn't an option.

I love love LOVE your space. Don't ever be apologetic for your taste - this is clearly your own style, your joy comes through in the design, and you make it work together. Wonderfully quirky without being over the top. Where did you find the vinyl upholstered benches?

Fishman's has some amazing stuff, but I can't afford 95% of what they carry. Vogue is a great alternative for doing projects on the cheap. I haven't checked out the Hancock in Edgewater... is it worth a visit?

At the end of each day, I take all of the singles out of my wallet and add them to my coffee can. Within a month, I would typically have enough rainy day cash to buy some cool accessories - new throw pillows, some picture frames, etc. - or would save a bit longer for bigger projects like refinishing thrift store furniture. I never missed the cash at the end of each day and it added up quickly!
