@Sotatex: In the northwest, Himalayan blackberries are not native. They have almost completely destroyed the true native wild blackberries. They are kudzu-level invasive, with the extra bonuses of being spiky and a home for rats.

For 11 months of the year, everyone mows, poisons, and pulls the %&^%^ invaders. For August we declare a truce and go berry hunting. :)

The first link goes to the last picture, not the Danny Seo project...

@ngnerd: I have that sofa model in the first picture. The build quality is fine, but the fabric is awful (wears quickly, holds lint and cat hair). But I bought it because it's a sofabed, and I needed one for guests - and that model is less than half the price of any other sofabed I've seen. So when I get my act together I absolutely will find it worthwhile to recover.

Sadly the antique sofabed market is limited. :)

@Trish1980 - I first had them in Vermont, though I've seen them mentioned most frequently on the West Coast.

They're the young, still-curled-up tips of ferns (probably sword ferns, though I'm not sure). Very earthy-green taste, texture something like asparagus tips, obviously more tender the younger and smaller they get, and so a very seasonal spring vegetable.

In junior high school, one semester of shop and one semester of Home Ec were both required for both genders. While the classes themselves were really basic, I think they were really a great idea. If anything I'd start them earlier - sometime in elementary school - and continue them over several years as a mandatory class.

(I liked shop more than Home Ec, both because I was very anti- "women's work" and because it was the first time as an uncoordinated girl from a handwork-inept family that I got to feel some mastery at physical work. As others in the comments noted, once I got to high school there was no time for anything but college-oriented classes, which is a shame.)

anning, I have the Skar shoe-storage/mirror, and it opens and closes just fine. I put hooks on the inside of the door and so all my jewelry lives in there as well as my shoes. If my boots could fit in there my storage issues would be entirely dealt with.

That is very stylish, but it's really expensive. ($50-$55 US? Really?) You can find a number of all-in-one adapters for under $20.

(A quick Google found this: http://www.conair.com/travel-smart-adapter-p-725.html but there are tons more.)

Also, remember that this *only* adapts the plugs - it doesn't adjust the voltage. Most electronics have their own voltage converters, but hair dryers, etc., usually don't. I haven't seen an all-in-one adapter *and* voltage converter, but one probably exists.

I'm not particularly fond of that version of it (especially that color), but it could be done more subtly.

Actually for a while I had a few pouches hanging from the arms of my Ikea Manstad sofa. I can't find the product name now, but it's made of matching material, has a rod that goes under the neighboring cushion to keep it stable, and has one big pocket and a few smaller ones. My notebook computer went into the big pocket, various cables went into the smaller ones, and since the arms were near the walls you couldn't really see it when it was tucked away.

Long plastic lighter, like for lighting a barbecue.

--It hangs next to the stove where it's easy to reach
--I don't have to store or fumble with a box
--My hands are six inches away from the flame at all times

Wow, you have a fabulous ceiling and moldings. I am envious.

And your windows give the room some natural symmetry! Even more envious...

But you have: Too much furniture, and too many finishes.

I agree with the others to get rid of the three dining-room-style chairs, by moving them to other rooms if nothing else. I would also get rid of or move the two bureaus unless you desperately need whatever they're storing to be stored right there. They're all beautiful, but they're just overwhelming the space. And I'd get rid of the purple chair too and leave the tree on the floor (or maybe on the pretty white table, which is just a little too tall to be a coffee table).

Once you've done that you'll be down to, as far as finishes, white paint, the dark wood of the bigger chair, and whatever the sofa base is. It will instantly feel calmer.

Move the desk to the corner where the big chair is now, and the big chair over to the seating area. If the tree can stand to be away from the window, I'd move it over near the desk.

I'd actually add furniture back in, in the form of more bookcases to reassert the lovely symmetry of the windows, but we've already established that I am a bit more desperate for symmetry than is perhaps rational.

At some point, I would do something:
--With paint to emphasize those pretty pretty ceilings and moldings
--With fabrics to bring the number of colors and finishes of curtains/upholstery/pillows into a little more harmony
--With frames so that there aren't quite so many different sizes/weights/textures of frames in the room

But those three would become less urgent with less furniture and some rearranging.

You obviously have an eye for beautiful things; I think you'll be able to appreciate them more if you are looking at fewer of them at once.

P.S. What's with the curtain rods? I actually own the same ones, and they're cute, but they're not hefty enough to compete with your window frames, and they don't appear to be associated with any... curtains.

The Maestro looks like it will go with anything and is lovely.

One thing I would suggest is going into the store and making sure whatever you choose is a true white. I chose Noritake's Sweet Leilani, and I still love it, *but* it's a translucent pale-gray instead of a true white. If I mix it with white pieces it looks dingy in comparison. (On the other hand, against a deep-colored tablecloth it glows, so it's not all bad.)

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about silver rims and the dishwasher. My Noritake is my everyday ware and goes into the dishwasher all the time, and the silver is fine. (Unlike the *cough* Waterford. Which is ok, as I have a mix of silver-rimmed and plain anyway. This just ... speeds up the process of getting things to match. Yeah, that's it.)

Not that I have this at all under control myself, but:
--Figure out a *limited*, neat storage system for things. Once your Box for Corks is full, you either can throw more corks out without guilt, or you have to come up with a project that uses them that week.
--Keep the storage system somewhere accessible (so you use it) but not in your way (so you trip over it).
--Keep a list of what you're keeping and where, so if inspiration hits you can find it. Don't lose the list. :)

That also costs *cough, hack* 1000 British pounds. I am thinking it is not in my future.

Well, given that they've got the three primary colors (in exactly their true colors, at least on my monitor), I'd imagine that, yes, people will be incorporating them into their interiors. ::grin::

The other colors look kind of grayed and mushy (and suspiciously 80s) to me, and not particularly spring-like. It will be interesting to see how they actually show up in clothing.

I'm pretty sure the mattress is just foam, but it's very firm. I was surprised at how comfortable it is given that firmness. However, my mother, who has a bad back, found that it was ok for eight hours, but if she slept late she woke up with her back hurting. I usually put a comforter on top to give a little shallow cushioning for guests. I have a bed, but sometimes sleep on the sofa if I'm being insomniac for whatever reason. The seating area itself is also wide enough that I rarely pull out the extension.

As a sofa it's very comfortable and I pretty much live on it when I'm home. I love the storage underneath. I also like the looks, though I guess it does scream IKEA.

My only problem, and it is a big one, is that the fabric is awful. I have 2 longhaired cats, and the fabric just grabs onto shed hair awfully. And every time I wipe it down the fabric naps and pills more and more.

I've definitely been looking at the slipcover post from last week. I'm concerned about how to get the cover on without breaking down and reassembling the couch, but if that's possible I'm dreaming of a nice ultrasuede cover from which the cat hair just slips off...

For sachets that don't require sewing, I like making lavender wands. You only need a length of ribbon, and (after the third or fourth one) they look really sharp and take about a minute each to make.

I can't speak to the relative sound quality, but Roku's SoundBridge radio has been out for several years, and I've really enjoyed owning it.

http://soundbridge.roku.com/soundbridgeradio/features.php

*Huge* Pro:

You can stream all of your music from your computer.

Cons:
No Slacker interface (that I know of)
Can't connect to a WiFi router faster than 802.11g
Setup was really really frustrating
