Looking at the new photos, I would say, rotate the piece 90 degrees clockwise, so the shelves a re a room divider, like others have suggested. Then you'll have a bit of shielding from the rest of the room while at your desk, and still have a side view out the window.

But yes, prob better in a less contrasty color to the rest of the room... (unless you are planning to paint the room- the other way to go I suppose!).

Yes - in our bungalow, the door trim that is plain goes all the way down to the floor (doesn't stop at the baseboard top). Where the door trim is fancier molding (the closets for some reason!)- the fancy part goes down to the top of the baseboard and then a plain piece the same width continues the rest of the way to the floor. The grain for that bottom piece is oriented vertically, so that it doesn't look like it is part of the baseboard. (Hope that description was understandable!)

If they are the right side, you can replace them with inexpensive shoji screens- just get one with 4 panels, remove the middle hinges (so you get two double-panels), and add rollers to the bottom (Home Depot - screen door section).

Then lean the giant mirror doors in the living room, where they look like a decorating accent!

I think it is going to be hard to give useful suggestions without an idea of the floor plan...

One idea would be to have the desk part on the other side of the bookshelf - although might look a little reception desk like... It might help carve out a work area however. But it is hard to tell without seeing where the other doors, etc, are...

It does seem like it would work a lot better color-wise if the desk/bookshelf combo were white, but I am not sure if you want to go through the trouble of painting it white, or selling it and buying a new white one from Ikea?

Actually I believe craftsman style is a subset of bungalow.

Online I have found them incredibly overpriced. Check ebay first if you can figure out the name of your pattern.

I suppose it is too much to ask that the Christmas posts wait until the day after Thanksgiving...
