One of my favorite bloggers just tackled this issue. As a renter, you might not be able to do quite what she did (install board and batten trim), but you could probably find some mounted all hooks that achieve a similar effect.

How To Fill This Empty Corner?

I have a fixture that is identical to this (and several similar ones) in our 1929 house. You should assume that the wiring in the ceiling is as old as the fixture and be cautious about overlamping the fixture with too high a watt lightbulb. I don't put anything over 40 watts in ours.

#1 is really important, but it should be titled "get camera sewer inspection" and not "check drains." Six months after moving into our house, we ended up shelling out nearly 15,000 dollars to replace our side sewer. Based on some evidence they found when they dug, our plumbers were pretty sure the previous owner was aware of issues but did not declare them.

This will be an inspection above and beyond what a ordinary home inspector will cover, but it will get you great ammo for negotiations. I live in a neighborhood in N. Seattle where all of the original sewer pipes have reached their point of failure...Sooner or later, they will all need to be replaced. I recommend sewer inspections to everybody I know who's buying in my neighborhood, and this advice has spared some people some grief. So I've saved others $$ even if I learned the lesson the hard way myself.

@ greenbayou Try searching for "stock tanks." In the Pacific NW, they're kind of trendy for container gardening...so hardware stores are starting to sell them (you used to have to find an agricultural supply place/feed store).

I've pieced together area rugs from smaller rugs using carpet seaming tape. (I made a large "towns and roads" play rug for my son's playroom by piecing together 3 smaller rugs arranged lengthwise). The rugs I used had a mesh backing and were low pile, so it worked well. I'm not sure how it would work with woven rugs. The tape bonds super well, so there's been no tripping over seams, etc.

Horrible idea...for child safety reasons. It's bad enough that soda pop and cool-aid now come in the same colors as toxic cleaners (green, blue, yum!). Now you confuse kids even more by putting toxic substances into soda pop-like packaging.

If you don't want to mess around with lumber, you can also grow them in a garbage can. Link here...from Seattle's other (now defunct) paper:

I'm pretty sure the ones in the picture were made by Umbra. I remember them only because I once seriously contemplated getting them. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to locate them anymore on the Umbra web site.

It's missing Hawthorne Hills (would be a little chunk between View Ridge and Windermere), and "Wedgewood" should be "Wedgwood":

Heh...they should put the Wedgwood Rock on the map! And maybe also the Fremont Troll.
