A loft space with a transparent/tranluscent floor platform would be interesting and still let light through those high windows. Just one thought.

If you own it, that would be a good space for a loft of some sort.
That's a lot potentially useful vertical space.

The distorted aspect ratio makes me crazy too. I don't understand why someone would spend a bunch of money on a fancy tv if they're not going to bother watching it right.
And hanging it up over a fireplace....it's an affront to fireplaces and is a weird place to comfortably view your tv.

If you can take some of the shelves out in the middle, you could add a mirror or framed art to the back wall with a picture light, and create a little bar or drop off spot.

What Should I Do with This Built-In Shelving? Good Questions

It always makes me crazy to see the timed challenges on certain shows (trading spaces, design star, etc.) where they expect designers to overhaul a kitchen or bathroom in two days.
I would NEVER want anyone to do make that happen in my own space or on a space i'm working on. That's just begging for shoddy workmanship, sloppy design — unsafe construction...plus it's just stressful to watch.

I was expecting worse — like my rental bathroom.

Customize with shower curtain, cabinet pulls, rug(s), mirror, temporary (but safe) lighting.
the removable decals are a good idea...accessorize.
the ugly countertop will disappear the more you live with it.

At least it's clean.

Agreed. i've lived alone for 10 years and cannot see ever living with anyone again.

11x13 is the size of my living room too. For my space i divided the living room
into two spaces - tv/sitting area and studio area with floor to
ceiling bookshelves. I love it because the
shelves create a partition without making me feel closed in and cut off from the
rest of the apartment and also solved a lot of storage issues.
That way you can have your bed in the room - behind the shelf/partition without
feeling like you just live in a bedroom.

you could use any sort of bookshelves though - Ikea Billy shelves are economical.

just an idea. good luck!

Taupe or light taupe walls would offset the white molding nicely and warm up the room
more than a grey but still easy to paint over if/when you move out later on.

Having grown up in a cookie-cutter 1960s ranch house, I was quite jealous of
the "secret passages" (crawl spaces, attics, walk-in closets, etc) that my
friends in old homes had. One of them had an underground tunnel that ran
the length of the yard from the basement to the garage.
Another had beautiful tudor-syle diamond-pane leaded windows.

What Impressed You About Other Homes As a Kid?

I have a workspace/living area in my apartment as - only it s a MUCH smaller space.

This is what I came up with:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/susanthebear/LivingRoom-3panellarge.jpg

It's a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf that divides the workspace (with 2' x 4' desk) and
my living area. The shelf acts as a visual/mental divider from the tv area, and
the storage is fantastic. Clearly this is a much smaller space than most people
would want, but the floor-to-ceiling partition works really well for separating the
two areas.
