Our worst incident occurred when we were away for the weekend. Our pet sitters had to rush away quickly in an emergency, but couldn't get the dogs (one Alaskan Malamute, Panda, & one German Shepherd mix, Kajol) to go into the finished-but-unfurnished basement where they stay when alone. So the pet sitters decided to jingle the dogs' leashes and make like they were going for a walk, while leading them down to the basement. Once the dogs were in the basement, they shut the door and left. Your Pet's Worst Home Mischief Story? | Apartment Therapy Boston |

Wow, I'm really surprised by the hostility towards long stays by friends or family in these comments. Perhaps it's because I've been influenced by my husband's Indian culture, but we regularly have friends over for a week or more at a time, and his parents and my mother will come to visit for more than a month at a time - this summer my in-laws were only here for three weeks (there's new grandkids at other siblings' houses), but last time they were here for pretty much the whole summer. We moved our couch so that it wasn't in the direct path of our dogs as they run down the stairs and out to the backyard. Our German Shepherd/Beagle mix, Kajol, (height of a GSD, energy level of a Beagle) had a bad tendency of jumping over the couch and onto the coffee table (or occasionally clearing both) in her rush to scare squirrels away from our yard. Also, the new set-up makes it harder for Panda, our Alaskan Malamute, to sneak up behind us and lick our necks/ears. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Are Pets A Factor In Furniture Arrangement? |

We have dogs who enjoy destroying shoes (oh, don't get me started on all of shoes that they've destroyed), so closed storage was a must. The latest shoe storage from IKEA - the SKÄR- is really nice in person. Slim lines, nice height, and a little shelf area at the top as a mini landing strip or place to show off knickknacks. My husband is Indian, and one point he made clear when we were dating was that part of his traditional culture is that parents can - and often do - live with their adult children. While his parents currently enjoy living on their own in India, we've always been open to the idea that they might eventually want (or need) to settle in with us. In fact, we bought our townhouse with an eye towards that eventual future - the walkout basement is a proper studio apartment with its own kitchen, full bath, etc. Currently we rent it out to help with the mortgage, but it'd make a nice in-law suite too. We have a German Shepherd mix, Kajol, who, while not very large, looks ferocious with her hackles raised - which happens everytime someone comes to our door unannouced. And then there's her buddy, Panda, a Malamute who looks ferocious at all times even though he'd give away anything to someone who rubbed his belly. Together they work as a pretty good deterrent team. We have two young large dogs who are always in & out of the house (they get kicked outside when they start wrestling, which is often). If their feet are disgusting they get a rub from the dog towel; otherwise we just keep them off the furniture for a few minutes until they've wiped off the dirt/mud/water on the hardwood floors. Then the Swiffer mop comes out for quick cleanup. It helps that we have a large deck and a flight of stairs between the main entrance to the backyard and the grass and mud. We have two big dogs who delight in running, digging, and rolling around in the mud before running inside the house, so I never require guest to take off their shoes if they don't want to. However, my husband and I do spend a fair amount of time wiping down dog feet and mopping our floors so that *we* can walk around in house slippers or bare feet in the house - and guests are welcome to do so as well. Most of our friends just take off their shoes automatically, partially for cultural reasons (lots of European & Asian guests), and partially 'cause they see a big stack of our shoes by the front door. When we host big parties shoes typically stay on, since the party almost always flows onto the patio. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | What Are Your House Rules? |
