we have a hans olsen couch upholstered in maharam fabric and covered by two cotton sheets under ikea bedcovers. with two cats + 3 yo later, there are a few snags but no stains. i would love to buy a leather sofa if i ever find one that i really love.

we also have eames fiberglass chairs throughout the house, and no one wears shoes indoors (i grew up with that rule).

i guess it depends on the kid (and please, don't tell me that it's just a matter of discipline!). knock on wood, our son hasn't been tough on things. at worst he's drawn on his craft table and the walls with crayons. i'm pretty strict about manners, but i've never tried to regulate his behavior around the furniture.

I love the rug, but I would be terrible about keeping it clean. Our son's room has similar dimensions, so this is very inspiring. I like how everything is accessible, and the vintage Little People are great!

I would get a small couch. Unfortunately all of our furniture is either Ikea or mid-century modern, and not every comfortable for snuggling (shallow seats, low backs). We have a lot of floor pillows, but when you're in the third trimester, sitting on the ground isn't that comfortable. Blame it on my supersized American behind!

i've bruised my shins on the Malm more times than i can count, and yet my toddler has never had a problem with it. i would love to own DWR's Min bed, which has rounded aluminum corners--a klutz's dream come true!

cute but a little too bulky for me. would be nice for playdates, but not on the go. i had something like the skip hop pronto that was super easy to open with one hand.

I never received a box of hand me downs or useful gifts (I didn't need 10 baby blankets) when I had my first here in the US. It doesn't help to be the first of your friends and relatives to have a baby (at the ripe old age of 29).

pale blue walls, black and white chevron rug, fabric bunting across a white crib...i haven't really looked at nursery tours lately (my son is 2.5) so it's interesting to see how similar elements can be combined to create two very different types of rooms (more traditional v. modern). it's a lovely room, and i like the use of non-nursery furniture.

Ah if only shaking out the poop in a disposable went smoothly for us! My 28 mo still nurses once a day and is in cloth diapers 70% of the time. We use flushable liners for those. I suppose I should use the liners on the disposables, too, because his poop is usually the consistency of a thick mousse. Have fun scraping that off! We've never had a diaper pail, and we've lived in a 2nd floor apartment the whole time.

If you want the Vipp, get it. It's a beautiful trashcan and will last a very long time (unlike my $90 Simple Human can, which only lasted 6 years before breaking).

i wouldn't bother with an expensive changing pad/station. we started using the rug at 10 months--or any flat and reasonably soft surface...

our nursery is 7x10", a very challenging space due to window, door, and closet placement. at this point there's a small dresser with diapers, etc., an Ikea Gulliver crib, and a small set of Elfa shelves with baskets for clothing.

the Baby Bjorn bouncy seat migrates around the apartment, the living room has baskets with toys, and the kitchen has an Ikea plastic high chair. maybe we'll get a Tripp Trapp, but aside from that, we don't need anything else.

i have an older version of the bjorn bouncer. it was the only thing my very finicky infant would nap in, and we still use it (14 months old, 20 lbs) when one of us has to shower and no one else can watch him.

the bedroom is for sleeping, only. we turned the main bedroom into the office, the little bedroom into a co-sleeping room, and the living room into a play space. not ideal, but it forces me to be tidier. i also try to weed out the toys that aren't being used so there are fewer to clutter the apartment.

i'm a breast-feeding, co-sleeper who doesn't get much sleep. 2 hour stretches at most for nearly 8 months. my son never cared for the bouncy seat or the car seat, and at this point, i doubt even a Sleep Sheep would work. the mattress is on the floor and i've resigned myself to many more sleepless nights and napless days...

i think the doll is by jess brown.

if only my son would sleep in his crib, i would love to dress it up with nice sheets. i'm glad that dwell is selling them separately, i love their prints.

840 sq ft baby my mom. somehow we've managed to survive for 3 months. the best part about living in a small space is that every time you get rid of something or move furniture around, you feel like it's a whole new place. we do have a basement storage space, and it's chock full of stuff, so even small-space dwellers aren't immune to hoarding.

space is like money for us. the more we have, the more we want (and the less we think we have).

I bought a custom ANT bike 3.5 years ago. It cost less than half the current going rate, and only took 5 months to make. The ride is incredibly smooth, and I've had very few maintenance issues. That said, you should always try out a lot of bikes before making this kind of investment. I wanted a bike for winter riding, and mine does the job well. However, it's really heavy and hard to carry up to my second floor deck. In retrospect, I would have ordered a lighter bicycle.

A decent used road bike will cost at least $470 in Boston, so spending $1100-2000 for your primary mode of transportation doesn't seem too ridiculous.
