i used g-diapers for the first few months of my son's life and eventually switched to seventh generation and now to naturecare (also available on diapers dot com). i liked the idea of the g-diaps but for us, they leaked every single time. it was a bummer and i let their customer service people know and they were very interested and told us that a redesign was imminent, but i have never seen it.

speaking of posters -- i'm new to the area and just bought one of those robin rosenthal baby bird counting posters http://www.robin-rosenthal.com/poster.html#). can anyone recommend a frame shop? (we live in pac heights.) it's just a poster, so i don't want to spend a fortune, but i'd like it to be cute (for a nursery).

also, should i be making any special considerations for earthquakes? i'm not hanging it over the crib or anything, but should i be looking a plexi rather than glass or anything?

thanks!!

re: the rocker question: i have the nurseryworks sleepytime rocker and can't imagine not having padded arms, but i wouldn't worry as much about the no head support, as I have never been able to sleep in the rocking chair.

i have another question for city-dwelling parents out there -- we're going to san fran on our first vacation when my son will be almost 11 months old. we'll be staying downtown (union square) and my husband will need to work some of the time. how will i get around? cab, so i should bring a car seat? bus, so i should bring a umbrella stroller? if i bring the car seat for the cab, how do i wander with the huge bulky seat? i have a stroller base for it, but my son's not as happy strapped in the seat for such a long time anymore. can i take cabs without a car seat? is that crazy?

thanks!!

Ok, we are mid- sleep camp. to add one more to your list of books tried, we also tried the mindell (the babycenter woman) book. the mindell advocates a moderate CIO at bedtime (similar to ferber) and says that overnight wakings will right themselves. also, we continued to soothe down for naps (as per the mindell). upshot is that we let our 7 month old cry at bedtime every night for 2 months until i was ready to jump out of my skin (and divorce my husband). such stress can only be envisioned by other parents who have been through it (i think).

our particular problem was that our son slept through the night very early, and then stopped just before 5 months. so i was convinced that he knew how to self-soothe, but he just wasn't doing it all the time. anyway, after trying mindell for so long, we called everything off for a couple of weeks and just rocked him down. then we found a consultant, a nurse from a sleep disorder clinic, who walked us through a system that we are using now.

the essence is a ferber system of crying with check-ins, but it starts out using one parent (who had not been doing most of the soothing) then the other and we started with bedtime, then moved quickly to naps and now we're dealing with nighttime wakings. the bedtime and naptime falling asleep is now down to less than 10 minutes and i'm holding my breath for the overnights. it really is working and i think the upshot is that staging things can help if you can't deal with a lot of crying all at once, but it drags out the process. for us, it was the balance that we could handle.

congrats to you guys and ursula! it must be amazing to have your life back and your perfect baby back! keep your fingers crossed for us...

sorry for the monster post -- this topic has possessed me for months!

ok, so i love the look of these and the first time i saw them, i went right away to purchase a set for myself. but they're china! (or porcelain, or something breakable, anyway.) not super practical for baby to actually use. i just wish they were melamine!!

this might be a stupid question -- but how would you make "whipped butter"? after you mash in the salt, put it back in the processor for some extra time and air?

i have experienced the mold problem and just chucked the offenders. i wish i had something better to offer, but it seemed impossible to get the gunk out of those little squeezey bath toys. but i have this exact safety ducky, and my problem with it is that the "hot" on the bottom has gotten progressively and permanently whiter. so the change between where the lettering starts out and the whitening if the water is too hot is very subtle. has this happened to anyone else? i guess i should just follow my own advice and chuck this too?
