So gorgeous. I love that the tiny details come together and add up to Parisian Art Nouveau. The feathers, shell color, brass edged mirror... and the florals on the tablecloth/curtain are straight out of a Mucha.

We'll be at our families' homes so we made a crisper-drawer clearing soup - wanted to free up the fridge to make room for the leftovers we get to snag!

I usually have trouble deciding what to have for breakfast the morning of a holiday gathering... but by the time I get hungry it's time to start cooking and I just snack as we go along!

I made the banana nut birthday cake last month for a birthday - my first EVER layer cake! It was delicious - I used a buttercream frosting instead of cream cheese and added some (hand)whipped cream to the top too.

The question is, who is going to make one for me for MY birthday?!

My mom still uses her mother's cookbook of Polish recipes for sweet and sour cabbage during the holidays. I can remember flipping through it as a kid to ew over the cow tongue and head cheese recipes. It was such a treat to hold - every time we picked up it we'd find various news clippings and pressed flowers between the pages, with a fair amount of four leaf clovers too!

I second grilling pizza outside - I'm obsessed and can't understand why everyone else isn't!

@mschatelaine - When I lived in Prague we enjoyed burcak (Sturm to Austrians) - young fermented wine! Ah I miss it so - I can't find anything comparable stateside!

Also - try grilling your pizza!!!

Once your charcoal is lit and hot your dough won't sag through the grate - and a single pizza will take less than 5 minutes! Grill one side (with a bit of olive oil), flip, add the toppings, and close the cover to melt the cheese. Mmm...

I have yet to find a whole grain pasta that I really love. Does anyone have a favorite brand they could recommend?

I tried a taste of the durian my botany professor brought in to class. The poor econ. students that next occupied that lecture hall walked in only to have their eyes tear up... I overheard someone say "Should we call facilities? I think there's a gas leak!"

I tasted onion and something I can only describe as strawberry car-freshener for the rest of the day and my Singaporean roommate had a good laugh at me. Then she told me about century eggs...

Agnosticfront16 - Frank's Frank's Frank's! I checked this thread to see if anyone else would name it, and what do ya know, you were first!

I love that there is now an Anchor Bar outpost in the Buffalo airport, so you can grab the hot sauce after the security checkpoint and not have to worry about checking anything!!! (P.S. ever tried Frank's on asparagus with a bit of blue cheese?)

Also a WNY treat - sponge candy mmmm.

It's been a few years since my visit but I seem to recall the city's "Little Italy" (Murray Hill?) having lots of fun boutiques and antique stores. I'm not sure about pricing, but the area is at least nice for a charming stroll and window shopping (and of course dinner).

I got lucky and saw an advance screening - overall it was a real delight but I could have done with less Julie and more Julia!

I think BetsyGinDC is right - Amy Adams as Julie Powell doesn't deliver any punch.

I received the full set as a gift! Good call on not purchasing the chairs - they are indeed a bit uncomfortable, even with cushions, and BOTH of them have required repair (cracking along the seats and legs). The table is holding up well enough though (since it only really ever holds guacamole and beer and not ME. Hm, maybe I should cut back on the guac and beer...)

A replacement for the chairs doesn't come to mind, but I'm curious to see what others suggest!

I just finished a great big helping of this and it was delicious! It was so easy too - I heated the strawberries while our dinner was on the grill, and after we were done I stirred in the "shortcake" part. By the time we were ready for dessert, dessert was ready for us!

Mmmm can't wait to make this with peaches and blueberries...

If your friend is moving somewhere where she's not speaking her native tongue, I think a thoughtful gift would be to provide a grocery store language guide!

When learning a new language, it doesn't take much to learn to ask "Where is the grocery store?"... but it takes a LONG time before you can ask a clerk "Where is the cinnamon/baking soda/parchment paper/cake flour..."

Maybe look in your own spice cabinet, type a list of what you find in an online translator (or call up your local university's language dept), and laminate a little sheet of cooking basics. You could include tools like "spatula" "strainer" and other non-basic vocab too.
