I just painted two of my dining chairs bright pink - they're set of those cheap brown stained folding chairs from world market - I left two brown, but I love it. Adds just the right pop of color without being overwhelming in my small place.

Generally every two weeks, more as needed, or if I'm having a bad day and want the pick-me-up of fresh sheets.

Re: pillowcases - I sleep on two pillows (my bedframe is slightly longer then the mattress, so one pillow ends up smushed in the gap by the end of the night). I flip them and rotate which one is on top. Even though I only change them every other week, I'm sleeping directly on two sides X two pillows, so I don't really worry about it.

I agree with what some others have said - think about what you want out of a one bedroom. Is it more space, or the wall?

Here in DC, I moved from a teeny-tiny one bedroom into a studio that was about the same size. My reasons at the time weren't really about the space, but I ended up being happier in the studio. So for me - given the same square footage, the studio was the better option. It was lighter, and w/out the wall, I had more options for using the little space I had.

Fast forward a few years - I'm much more interested in entertaining in my home, and the studio was a little awkward. I didn't really have room for a dining table, and even if I set one up, you were still eating dinner next to my bed. So I moved into a one bedroom - like you, my rent (when you factored in utilities, etc) about doubled. My space increased by probably a little more than 1/2. It's been totally worth it - I can have people over whenever I want, I have a table that sits up to 8, and I can shut my bedroom door to hide any mess.

And, yes - like you mentioned - I feel much more grown-up, like this is a real "home".

It's more work, I know, but if you make a meal that he will eat, go ahead and make an exotic version for yourself, or offer more unusual fare as additions to what's already being made.

For example - if you're making plain-jane pork chops, make up a some kind of chutney, or exotic salsa using spices or fruit/chile combos that might be different. You can add it to your chop, and maybe convince the BF to try a bite. He'll still have his safe-version, so he won't be as intimidated by your fancy bite.

That's kind of what worked for me - I'd go to restaurants and order everything "plain" or with the "sauce on the side" but started trying bites of my companions' dishes and began to learn what I liked. Ease him into it, rather than confront him with an entire plate of something he won't even try on principle.

I made pineapple sangria for memorial day this year - I don't remember which white wine I used, but it was one bottle of wine, two of those little cans of pineapple juice and two cans of gingerale. I added chunks of pineapple and mango that had marinated in a cup (poured over until it covered the fruit) of triple-sec (because it was the only liquor I had on hand that made any sense). I think I had a quarter cup of sugar in the triple sec, but if the fruit is ripe and you use a sweet liquor like that, I probably could have left it out.

What if they created a "wish list" on amazon, and made it available to friends who asked. It could serve as a "this is what I will get for myself when I have $xx spare dollars laying around" or as a "registry" as described.

Less presumptious, in my opinion, if it's presented as a list of things that they want for their home and intend to purchase on their own when they can. Sort of reads more like "Hey, I'm willing to spend my own money on this, but if you're looking for something to get me - here you go!" rather than "Bring me presents - here's what I want."

Out of sheer laziness, I've taken ribbon, threaded it around the main support of the blinds and tied a curtain rod up (at each end and one in the middle, where it's a long window). I actually kind of like the look - everything hangs flush to the window. I'll try to take a picture tonight if it would help.

I found a tiny, pretty, saucer-type dish that fits almost perfectly (w/ a little bit of tissue wedged underneath) that I use to hold my hair pins and clips (sometimes earrings but I'm too afraid of knocking them down the sink drain to leave them there for long).

I'm making at 5 pies for a pi(e) party on Sunday - Key Lime, Blood Orange tart, Peach-Vanilla-Cardamom & Chocolate-Caramel tart are on deck, plus another undetermined pie (strawberry? nutmeg-maple cream?)

This weekend I'm planning ahead and mixing up loads of pie dough for next weekend's Pi(e) party (next Sunday - 3.14!!).

To enjoy now, either madelines or biscotti - I'm undecided. And probably pancakes either later this morning or tomorrow.

Astur - I used to do pre-Thanksgiving dinners for friends too! Lately, though, enough of my friends stay in town for the holiday that we rotate hosting duties.

This isn't recipe related, but my mom always served rolls in this chicken-shaped basket. I've hosted Thanksgiving (or pre-Tday!) dinners for several years, and two years ago I was lamenting my own lack of a chicken-basket. So for my birthday that year, my mom gave me her chicken-basket. It has no style what-so-ever, and sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the table, but I love it and it will always have a place at my table.

I really like the idea of stocking up for the holidays. There's something to be said about the peace of mind when the holiday season gets hectic, knowing that you're prepared for last minute host/ess gifts and friends dropping by.

I'm all for cheap wines, too - Trader Joes is great, but kind of out of my way. Percent - what wine shop did you frequent in DC? I tend to hit up the random corner markets near my apartment, or Whole Foods/Harris Teeter - though the variety isn't the best there. I'll hit Best Cellars on my way home if I'm on top of things (generally not).

I too love the gray walls - but I have to ask about those chairs. Are from Urban Outfitters?

If they are, I'm curious about their quality - they have the same design in a charcoal color that I'm thinking about buying.

If they aren't UO, can you please share where you got them?

I haven't been able to find anything similar - the closest I've seen are various slipper chairs, but I love the way the back is separate from the seat. (I'm in a studio and I think they would balance well with the futon-as-sofa).
