Ikea has shelves ("Lack") That look like this. There is a bracket that is screwed to the wall, then a hollow boxlike shelf is slid onto that. The bracket is not visible. I feel your pain. I live in a cottage with the no paint rule. But instead of all the walls being white, they are horrible combinations of pale yellow and a strange bluish-green that I can't quite define. Your choice of blue is very snappy.
