I love seeing homes where kids and grownups live together without alienating one another. This looks like a home for all, and all within her belong. Lovely.

Those skylights... sigh...

Bacon's favorite activity is to suck the appendages from his stuffed animals' bodies and then leave a trail of fluffy white stuffing around our main living areas (for us to admire what he accomplished). We then patch the holes with left over fabric from t-shirts or boxer shorts and, I must admit, the deconstructed/reconstructed toys are infinitely more interesting than the brand new ones. This is pure inspiration for us!

I second the horizontal suggestion. If you've settled on going custom, then its totally doable. The overall stance of the space would be much flattered by reinforcing the long horizontal lines (more flattering for the lower ceiling height).

Maybe something wider, more plank-like, probably wood — will probably feel more modern and mid-century — would satisfy the safety concerns without sacrificing the aesthetic.

Can't wait to see the end result ;-)

The carpet was actually installed mere weeks before the discovery of the mold so a deep clean was all it needed and they were able to save it.

As for the wooden furniture, it relocated to the basement. All forms of upholstery went out to trash.

Bacon's very glad that everyone is as happy with his new rug as he is. Yes, the samples are connected - we used the leftover dots that came with our full size tiles (Flor always sends an abundance of those things). And, yes, Bacon's girlfriend shares his sentiments in full...we have the scratch marks on the outside of the door to prove it :-)

First off, SO SORRY about the gender mix up! Pit fall of the Internet...

Secondly, happy to hear everyone's enjoying this. I'm working on this sort of reader-challenge post style becoming more regular.

A little cartoonish but for a budget motel, I'll take new and cartoonish over old and sketchy any day! This is a great revamp.

this would really terrify me but, on a more general note, I hate that I couldn't really get a feel for the space with all the vignette shots! It'd be nice to have a better understanding of the proximity of all these critters to the actual living inhabitants...

Kayla here with a few answers to your questions from Sandy, the owner:

The wallpapers are Schumacher, Williamsburg Collection, circa 1972. I don't know if you can order vintage papers. I haven't seen much from the company recently that I liked but they had some great papers, to my eye, back then.

Peter made the bed frame. I have seen similar, can't remember where. Design Within Reach maybe?

The bronzes are all Peter's, as is the wire Sandhill Crane. People can email him at crowstudio (at) gsinet (dot) net. We are finally working on a web site but not there yet.

The living room armchairs are by Baker. I don't have the chairs' name. They are very comfortable.

The guest and master bedroom room paints are California. Two colors are used in reverse. They are from California's Historic Collection colors, Andover Cream and Pitch Pine. Color choices were done with the help of a wonderful colorist named Susan Harlow in Putney, Vermont.

Paint color is Benjamin Moore Gentle Gray and the yellow lacquer tray came from Pottery Barn.

I'm actually working on paint color post regarding this space because we chose to paint the adjoining half stair and kitchen one step darker and the effect is lovely! Its a very soft, sophisticated, neutral blue — doesn't feel at all like open sky or a little boy's room.

Sorry, the link is buried in the post. These particular hangers are sold in many stores (Container Store, as mentioned) but are the cheapest here:

and you're rewarded with a cheaper price when you purchase more (which helped us out here)

Kayla back, again -

Thanks for the compliments, all! We hoped this post would inspire folks to make the most of the objects we all seem to have lying around. A critical mass of anything usually creates an impressive visual when its all laid out together - makes the sum feel much greater than the individual parts.

We'd highly recommend these adhesive hangers for any type of ceramics or even wood or metal (it all depends on weight, really). We did remove the hook from the one bowl that didn't work out and after only 30 seconds submerged in water it came right off without a bit of residue.

If you embark on your own installation be sure to send us photos!
