I feel stupid calling myself a flexitarian, but it's pretty much what I am. I usually end up calling myself an almost vegetarian, because I eat meat once every month or two. Calling yourself an omnivore just doesn't work when you spend the vast majority of your life eating vegetarian. It also lets a little bit of the pressure off of a host or hostess by letting them know that I'd appreciate it if there are veggie options, but they don't have to go out of their way.

Is anyone else getting tired of overly curated closets with six things in them? People need clothes, for Pete's sake.

Thank God there are other people who find this disconcerting. I'm not saying I've never brought reading material into the bathroom with me, but to have magazines (plural!) permanently living in the bathroom weirds me out. If you're spending that much time on the toilet on a regular basis, you need to adjust your diet. Seriously. It shouldn't take you long enough to get bored.

I just fell in love with brussels sprouts about a month ago--fresh off the stalk and roasted with salt, pepper and olive oil. Completely amazing and nothing like the smelly, squishy little brains my mother used to boil for us. Yuck.

I love to put stuff on top of the cabinets--but only if it's either decorative and doesn't need to be cleaned often, or it gets used so often that it doesn't have time to get dusty. Unfortunately, one of my roommates this time around is 5'2", so that's a no go. And it's a bit of a pain because she doesn't want to have to use a stool for anything, so we have to keep all heavily used items as low as possible or she'll whine. We haven't had the conversation about my bad back yet, but it's coming soon. Along with a friggin' stool.

I'm with everyone who hates the Mao pictures, and I also get annoyed with the Che obsession of the last few years. And since we're on the subject of people plastering there homes with images that they don't sully understand, I'm also annoyed by all the buddha imagery and busts in the contemporary homes of pretentious non-buddhists. You should not be able to find religious/political iconography at your local Pier One.

I'm amused by the idea of a blog encouraging people to spend less time on a computer. If blogging paid my bills I'd be touting the brilliance of techy gadgets all the time. :-)

I haven't had cable in six months and since I moved I've turned my television on exactly three times. I do, however, spend a lot of time reading online, and I'll throw a movie in my laptop to watch in my jammies before bed. As a student and graduate assistant, there's no way I could live without a computer at home. I enjoy turning it off some days, along with the phone, but eventually I always need to go back to it (yes, need, not want) to get things done.

And no one will ever take away my music. I always have a song in my head and would seriously lose my mind without music to clean to (or organize to, or craft to, or, well, you get the idea).

I took advantage of the trial version of papers a few months ago. I was really excited about it at first, but it seemed a little cumbersome after a while, especially since it didn't recognize some of the articles I had. I'm still torn on whether or not I want to buy it.

There's some amazing advice here. I'm an omnivore but I eat vegetarian 90% of the time, and I'm gradually working my way to using vegan ingredients as much as possible. I don't want to make it official because I don't want to think of my diet as restricting (the surest way for my stubborn behind to start eating junk), but I could probably get away with describing myself as a vegetarian who cheats. I've been doing just what a lot of posters have suggested: gradually trying to eat healthier and phase out animal products. It really is amazing how easy it becomes when you stop thinking about what you can't have and start exploring all kinds of new ingredients. Thanks for all the book/cookbook/film titles. I've seen a lot of them over and over, and the suggestions here have become part of my reading list. ;-)

The "make the switch to e-books" suggestion is irritatingly casual. Consider the amount of money people have invested in heir book collections (I recently culled mine from about 500 to just under 300 and I couldn't stop thinking about all the money I was giving away). Then consider the amount of money it would take to make the switch to e-books. It's not feasible for a lot of people.

I'm not a vegan, but one of my roommates was for eight years, so she has all kinds of amazing cookbooks with vegan recipes. My favorite is Bryant Terry's Vegan Soul Food. Absolutely amazing. I'm looking forward to lots of new ideas this week, hopefully without the political tension that so often comes with discussing veganism. If there's a place that can focus on the food and keep it positive, this is it. :-)

@lazy_lurker: I'm with you! Everyone who has a yard should have a garden, even if it's just a couple of tomato plants and some herbs. It's amazing what a difference it makes in your life.
