There are moth traps which are a lot less odor-invasive than the old school moth balls. They're pheromone based and seem to work pretty well from what we've understood. They're called 'Allure' I believe.

A few suggestions.

Classic and timeless: Go with an American Sarouk design for reds and blues. Great floral patterns and allover field will be much more conducive to bringing the room together as opposed to a repeating pattern such as a "bokhara"

Current Trends with "Antique revival": Chobi or Peshawar rugs with accents of sage, antique ivory, bark brown and sometimes cinnabar, copper or charcoal top colors. These often have more negative space and more earthy tone. A little more subdued, but a great celebration of classic Persian designs such as Mahals and Sultanabads.

Any which way, all the best of luck and don't forget to rotate the rug every 6 months to decrease likelihood of traffic-pattern wear.

Looks really great!

My suggestion would be this. The wall with the photographs gives weight to the hallway.

If you do not plan on placing photographs/other on the opposite wall, cut down only one side of the tiles to counteract the "weighted" feeling (so the division of tiles is not equal). This will help counteract the weighted feeling.

If you do decide to put photographs/other on the opposite wall, I would cut down both sides.

All the best,

David

Hi Sydney,

I like the rug too! I couldn't find any great links to demonstrate quickly, but the colors and design remind me a lot of "stone washed dhurries". Given it has heavier fringe, it could also be an herbal washed Soumac (Sumak, Soumak)... Anyway probably a newer rug, looks great in the space. If you're looking, those are some of the suggestions. :)

Nice entry and great tips. Some nice looking rugs in there too. The ivory one appears to be a Turkish allover, and the smaller traditional color red and blue look like moud and mahi designs. Thorough Steps! Thanks :)

Looks like a small Afghan "Bokhara" rug next to the bed. Some newer versions may be found at a very modest investment range.

Tough to say! That rug is not atypical of 1920's - 40's Nichols Rugs :)

Very nice. At the foot of the bed is a Karaja Runner. They often have similar look to Heriz Rugs, but typically have Single weft construction and are often found at a lower price point.

Great post Colleen, and... the rug is FANTASTIC. This is a very unique variety of Oriental Rugs. We believe this is an authentic Persian Tabriz, appears to be of very good quality. There are a lot of knock off carpets made to emulate this variety in machine made and lower grade hand knotted... However, I think it's fair to say this is the real deal. We did an entry on Mahi Tabriz Rugs (and those similar). Really hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed the rug! It's a great piece :)

Hello,

Proper advising would really depend on what type of rug and a more detailed photograph of the problem.

A steamer may work. However, for select rugs (depending on the type, fiber and construction), it may not be ideal. Additionally, there is a possibility with a tufted rug that this could be a permanent crease.

Blocking would be an expensive proposition for most area rugs/carpets. Generally speaking, blocking is really a process reserved and advisable for Oriental Rugs which have severe ripples, curvature or uneven weave: not for a rug with one "kink"

Ryssiecakes - I saw your question, the white area rug looks similar to Flokati rugs. They have the same shag.

As someone else mentioned, the Red rug that's larger is known as an "Afghan", although people do refer to them as "Afghan Bokharas." There are many variations of these made in numerous qualities. Older ones in excellent condition tend to have greater value and better wool from my experience... but with rugs generalizations are tough to claim. The "Bokhara" part is not really a proper or formal attribution, but is good to know for keyword reference, that refers to the "guls" which form the allover repeating field pattern. These rugs rarely used more than 3-4 colors, often implementing a deep rich red, and bold hard black. Some newer versions tend to use bright pink outlines.

It's tough to tell from the photograph, but the smaller rug in between the Afghan and Flokati I believe may be an Anatolian. These are rugs which were made in Turkey, atypical small mat size, they tend to be narrower and longer than standard 2x3. Something like 1'7x3'4" or in this vicinity.

Best,

Sometimes you may be able to come across "Indo" art deco rugs - These are Indian (India Indian) interpretations of Nichols designs. They embody many of the characteristics of Nichols rugs in terms of design, hand knotted nature and colors, but come at a much lower price point. These were primarily made in the late 70's and early 80's.

Nichols is more along 1920's to 30's. It also seems some "revival Nichols" were made in the 50's too which were also from China, some with nice wool like the originals but in very small production.

As a side note, the carpet at the top of this entry in blue and softer antique ivory is known as a "Peking" carpet. These were made just before the Nichols rugs came into play. Peking carpets are approximately 1900-1915 for the most part. You can almost always identify them by the "trademark" blues, which are all derived from the same dye, just dyed more times. There are "replicas" which exist of these types which were made in the 70's and 80's. These came from China like the original Pekings, however, unlike the original, the newer versions have a much more manufactured look on the back, in addition to more precise gauge yarn.

Sincerely,
David
