Many (most???) refrigerators have extra holes so you can switch the direction in which the door opens. This way, the hinge would be next to the corner where the dishwasher is and the handle would be where the hinge is now. In 1997, when I was 21 years old, I was living at home in Halifax, Nova Scotia and unexpectedly landed a job at Mount Sinai Hospital. The job started in five days which left me exactly one day to find an apartment in New York. I decided to move into a tiny studio on the Upper East Side because I didn't know the city very well and wanted to be able to walk to work. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've moved back to Halifax but I haven't had a commute since. My ten minute walk to work along the waterfront is one of the most pleasant parts of my day. I can't imagine ever joining the car culture again. Being just steps away from the best shops, museums, galleries, and theatres is worth a lot of square footage to me. Still, most of my friends can't imagine giving up their 3000sq.ft. homes in the burbs and driving weekly to the local big box stores. To each his own, I guess. What about the Emeco Navy Chair? I just moved into my new condo and I've put in Wenge coloured floors. I think the navy chairs will give me just the right amount of pop. I just bought my first condo, and it's an apartment conversion. In the next month, I plan to rip out all the nasty carpet and put in a nice walnut hardwood. The one from Kahr's has me all hot and bothered ( http://www.kahrs.com/us/Consumer/Products/Floors/Wood%20Species/Pages/Product.aspx?article=111B29VA50KE040 ), but it costs a kajillion dollars at my local dealer. I like it. The one thing that I noticed right away is that some of the groupings of art are hung really high. For example, the grouping in the bedroom next to the door are way up next to the top of the door. Unless you have a really good reason, I always start by measuring 55" from the floor to the center of the piece of art (or grouping). It always seems low at first but if you go to a gallery I think you'll find that seems to be the default height. Our local boutique grocery store has a huge transparent collection box for leftover foreign currency near the front door. It's quite an eye catching piece and when it starts to get full they donate all the cash to the local children's hospital.
