I am constantly frustrated when I'm at my parents house using their open kitchen. I'll try to get a snack, do some dishes, or make dinner and my mom will pause the tv because of the noise. I feel like I can't use the kitchen except during designated "dinner making" time.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. This is my umbrella stand. Although, I hope it's happy being a bookshelf for now because I don't use big umbrellas, just little folding ones.

To answer your questions, while it seems solidly constructed compared to modern day furniture, it doesn't seem like it would have been too luxurious at the time. The wood grain is nothing special. Thanks for all the info on waterfall furniture, arroyo, and about the company, whitepeacock.
I have more detailed pictures if anyone is curious:

Umbrella stand makes complete sense. I was thrown off by the original description as a "pantry shelf" when I bought it. By the way, I bought it at Housing Works in New York City, and I sent this to the NY AT. Not sure how I ended up in Boston!

In terms of before and after shots, I have no plans for fixing it up for now. I like the rustic look. Eventually I will probably stain it rather than paint it. The original staining was stripped a long time ago and the wood has gotten dirty since then. Any tips on how to clean raw wood???

John H and Cozy - she DID sit on them. She said they were both comfortable.

This is what I always do! You can also buy 'surface plates' at home depot which you screw into the wood and wood or metal legs that screw into the surface plates. I haven't had a real bed frame in at least a decade.

Moving in with my boyfriend and his two roommates this summer was step one in getting rid of everything I thought I needed. I had a hard time parting with so many things that I can't even remember I ever owned now! Step two comes in September when I move to NYC by bus. Two suitcases is all I get to keep. Wish me luck!

I have ukuleles, not guitars, but I display them along the wall as art, hung by the neck. I've seen this featured on apartment therapy as well, maybe a year ago.

It also makes me just think of all the people that have slept there before. I mean, I KNOW that lots of people have slept there before, but I don't need to be reminded of it.

I like the cabinets unpainted! In fact, I would love to have them. Maybe we can trade?!
They're sort of like the reverse of this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36529290@N05/3371225956/in/set-72157616555382436/
I think with modern flooring and new hardware the cabinets will look really classic. A painted white table and chairs would balance out the room. I would also add a narrow shelf of some sort to the left of the stove to anchor it. Right now the stove is floating, I think it looks a little strange.

I think I got this idea from Real Simple. Use an empty toilet paper roll to hold your cords together. Fold up the cord and slide it in. This is best for behind the tv or desk where it won't be seen perhaps, but it works great in a pinch.

I would love to win the soft sleeve.

I recently grew some cilantro from seed (hint: coriander seeds) at my desk in a window and it looked anemic until I sat it under my fluorescent lamp. It does the same sort of thing an expensive grow lamp would. My cilantro is looking great now!

I will finally hang the drapes in my living room, a few months after installing the rod! Right now they're a crumpled mess at the bottom of my closet.
