Love everything but the wood behind the bed. I'd have too many nightmares of bugs in the wood.

But the art and the colors! Wow. Wish we knew more about the art!

I like a top sheet because I can't seem to get the hang of duvet covers. They flummox me and take too much time. But I never tuck in my top sheet.

I can do without TV, microwave, dishwasher, blender. But I like to have a toaster oven since it takes a while to warm up my oven.

I'd like to suggest a new ritual that will replace wedding presents: the leaving the nest party! After all, isn't that what we are all supposed to do? Become independent of our parents, leave their nest and start our own. Then maybe down the road, after you've tasted your independence, find someone to re-nest with.

Anyway, if I could take a wand and make it so, that's the ritual I'd start. I sure could have used stuff to start my life with. And I'm so sick of giving gifts for second and third weddings.

On another note: love my Orek XL vacuum. Lasts forever and really light. Don't like toasters like the Breville that have electronic panels.

I have a small space and after buying loveseats and small sofas (not deep), I have decided that a larger sofa may work best. Sounds counter-intuitive, but I've never been comfortable in any of the loveseats or small sofas that I've bought and I do need something long and deep enough to double as a nap/daybed or guest bed.

For better or worse, buying real estate (to live in), is one of the only ways left for a vaguely working/middle-class person to get a leg up. Unfortunately, it rewards people for buying and then selling after a big run up and moving elsewhere to try to do the same. Ironically, this makes neighborhoods less stable which was one reason I believe our government gives a tax break for owning.

But with jobs being less stable and people considered migrant laborers now (to wherever they can get a job), I might think twice before buying these days.

With 2100 sq. feet and all new furniture, I would expect it to be pretty perfect. For better or worse, many of us who are older need to make do with some of what we have collected over the years and in a much smaller space. A nice upending of expectations, though. Young people don't own style.

This is why I joined Apartment Therapy. Not for those big apartments or houses where it's easy to design/decorate. I like the "apartment" in Apartment Therapy. And now that I live in earthquake country, it is harder to find small-space solutions.

The ancient Greeks had it down. After a long journey (no planes, trains or cars in ancient times), a host was supposed to offer food and drink and NOT ask any questions for something like 7 days!

Agree with you about the casual use of profanity. But re:
"and I think we 20-somethings should hold ourselves to a higher standard in general. "

What on earth makes you think everyone on this site is 20-something?

Lauren, can you tell us the depth of the closet? It looks roomy (2 pillows). Love what you've done!

Do you have a link to the story about the NY apartment fire. I live in an HOA and have neighbors who leave lint in the (communal) dryer and more. Would love to show them this story. What happened?

I, too, have a tough time finding shallow shelving (for books, for anything). It is a void in the marketplace. And the observation that older furniture was shallower is true. It seems furniture designers design for monster homes and not apartments.

I'd like to see more about this in Apartment Therapy since many of us came here for that purpose. Is there anyplace to find things by dimension?

I'd like to see Apartment Therapy do more of this for more products. It's not as simple as before-after photos as the remarks show. And what works on a horizontal surface may not on a vertical surface where gravity may intercede.

There seems to be a dearth of shallow shelving units. Since most of my books are less than 10" deep, I'd like to see a tall, shallow shelving unit. Anyone know of one?

Great news! Like others here, I first came because the title was "APARTMENT Therapy". We small-space dwellers are pretty much ignored by most furniture companies and the trend for monster homes has made it even harder to find what fits in our homes.

Please keep the "apartment" in apartment therapy, especially the challenges of living without built-ins, with lots of books, how to hide the "clutter" that most people would never see if one has a garage, storage space or an extra room!

I love that you have made the space suit you and that it looks lived in! The kitchen looks like a real working kitchen. And backlighting the pegboard is genius!

Wondering what you used for the library shelves and whether they are pre-fab or you made them from scratch. I have so many books and so little space, but most bookshelves waste space because they're too deep. Please! Tell me about the library shelves!

You have given me inspiration. I have a tiny place with a long hall and tall ceilings. Sisters, please tell me what, besides luggage, do you use the dropped ceiling storage for. I want to think about what else I can store there and whether it's worth the trouble. Great job!
