Yeah, this is not a "good question". But, it is a good thing that you can now enjoy your beer! Once it is cold again, of course.

So beautiful. And I'm impressed; I have a hard enough time keeping my house presentable with one golden. Not sure how yours looks show worthy with two!

Jamie Oliver has a great tomato pasta sauce using fennel. I can't remember what book it's in (the yellow one?), but I probably make it twice a month. Super easy, and a little bit different.

I also want to play devil's advocate, as I have been on both sides of this dilemma. While they may be being inconsiderate, they may also just be an active family with kids. That can't be changed, and it's not fair to ask them to. Noise happens, and unfortunately, such is the nature of old buildings. I've been in my current downstairs neighbor's apartment while my fiancee has been walking around upstairs, and it sounds like a rhino. And he's just walking. So, I nag him to take his shoes off, but there is only so much you can do.

I think a request to place a rug in the bedroom is very reasonable, and would go over best in such a sensitive situation. Both parties get so defensive in times like this, you have to tread lightly (no pun intended) and compromise.

And I'm sorry, but to whoever suggesting blasting them with noise during all hours of the night; really? That is only going to make it worse. And, with kids, it appears they're already up anyway.

I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing! My white (well, once white, now slipcovered and destroyed) Ethan Allen sofa desperately needs recovering due to my two dogs. In my defense, I got the sofa first! I pulled the trigger and ordered a cotton/polyester blend from West Elm. It's pretty inexpensive for upholstery fabric, but should stand up well. They've got an okay selection. I went with a basketweave, but I do believe they have a great linen/cotton blend in a few colors. In any case, it's a good place to start. Best of luck, and send any good vibes my way. I'll be undertaking this myself...

My eighty pound Golden Retriever usually gets more covers than I do, while our second pup curls up at the foot of the bed. Sure, I get disturbed sometimes when they're readjusting in the middle of the night, but there is nothing like waking up to those big brown eyes or watching them snooze with all four legs in the air. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I did the exact same thing with almost the exact same dresser a few months ago. Moving to a new state, and a new apartment, I was a bit short on everything. Luckily, my neighbors across the street were having a yard sale, and I snatched a dresser for twenty bucks. After thoroughly washing it (smoke residue and spiderwebs!) and hand sanding it, I painted it a lovely semigloss deep purple. Please enough to put it on display, it currently houses all my VHS/DVDs and is the perfect height for my TV. Just goes to show you what some paint and elbow grease can do. And, the best part about moving to Texas? I only had to wait five minutes between coats of paint!

Beautiful! I sent the link to myself to keep it handy for inspiration.

Regarding the butcher block countertops: I've used them plenty, and they are the best. Even with heavy usage/traffic. I use them (and it would be a shame not to) just like a butcher block. They are simple to clean with a metal poof and some bleach water. Or even just a sudsy sponge. Once and awhile I get some garlic residue on the apple I'm slicing next (blech!), but other than that, no complaints. The great thing about wood, is that if you really mark it up, you can gently sand it out. But honestly, they only get better with age.

I now wish I had a beat up old shed, only to be able to redo it! I've used that exact same Behr paint color on a bedroom wall before, and it is amazing!

I hate to play devil's advocate, but as someone who has lived in rickity old Chicago apartments and experienced both sides of this problem, are you sure she knows she is making that much noise? The first thing I would do is contact her, nonconfrontationally, of course (that makes it worse). She may truly not know that you can hear her. If that is the case, problem solved. Or, she could be really just be a menace, in which case I would just continually contact your management company. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I had a similar studio, and am not entirely sure why I ever moved out. The hen downstairs might have had something to do with it...
But, I would definitely go with a neutral color on all the walls. A grey, or a subtle mustardy/earthy yellow (that can be a neutral, right?).
And nice call on the Expedit. If you get the 4x6 length, or something similarly sized, you can still see over the top, and it does a great job of dividing the room while not being too obtrusive. Mine worked so well in the space, the girl who moved in after me actually bought it to keep in the space.

Have fun! It looks like a great place!

Thanks for the help guys!
I actually did get a slip cover, made by Ethan Allen specifically for this sofa. Unfortunately, it is also only in light colors, so I was back in the same boat...
I've tried working with Dr. Watson (the 80 lb. golden retriever who really likes mud) on staying on one part, but it is just an exercise in futility, and who am I kidding, I'm a total sap for her sad old man eyes.
Scotchguard sounds like a promising lead, at least in the dry winter months, and maybe a bundle of blankets/throws? Also, hosing down the dog before she comes inside should help. If only the landlord would bring the hose back.

My parents race every night. The person who falls asleep first gets the bed. The loser gets the couch, one of several spare beds, the futon (or even the floor sometimes). They both snore horribly... Really really horrible. I fear it is hereditary.

I made my own, and it seems to be working grand. Dr. Watson, my golden retriever puppy, loves it! I just used an old wine crate and a jigsaw (I believe I saw this idea here somewhere...). Just flip the crate over, and saw a hole in the bottom so your dish is supended. With a puppy who loves to make puddles, this was a life saver!

Hendrick's is by far the best gin I've ever tasted (and I went through a phase in college...). Crisp, different, and delicious, I can't help but lick it off the side of the bottle after pouring a G&T.

I use the Bissell green for spot cleaning on my white couch (Not the smartest buy, but I wouldn't have been happy with anything else...) It works great on the little stuff, but just isn't a good fit for a large piece. However, I'm looking for a cleaning service to do a once over on the whole thing. Any suggestions?
