Add me to the "calm yourselves" camp. Draping cloth over a bare halogen bulb is obviously a huge fire hazard. Arranging fabric around a CFL or LED bulb, with plenty of space and ventilation besides, is not a big deal. And heat radiates up, not down.

But really, my concern is more with poking holes in a nice scarf, or casting a strangely-colored glow.

I'd also like to see ideas for sprucing up long fluorescent fixtures.

This is a lovely home, but I think the most remarkable thing here is--you specified Colonialtown! It's like Orlando is a real city, with established, widely recognizable districts! It seems so...grownup.

I was wondering how you were doing with your meyer lemon tree getting enough light. I'm in a similar situation--my balcony faces south, but there are lots of trees filtering the light. Are you getting any blossoms/fruit?

I also make a bunch at a time in the slow cooker and then freeze them, but I make sure they're well drained before I freeze them. I portion them out into muffin tins, and once they're frozen then they pop apart into loose beans pretty easily. Then I can pull them all in one big bag, and it's easy to measure out what I need. I also find that they thaw a lot quicker this way, and are less mushy than if I reheated them in their cooking water.

My roommate and I have just resolved to be a more earth-friendly household, and step one was cutting up a bunch of old tshirts into squares, and leaving them in the kitchen to use in place of paper towels. we have a designated bag hanging in a corner where we throw the dirty ones, so they don't get thrown away or contaminate our regular laundry. one month in and i don't miss the paper towels at all.

I wish that people would stop thinking that everything can and should be recycled into coasters. anybody who actually uses coasters already has them, and nobody needs that many anyway. it's not like they're single-use items. recycling trash into clutter isn't that much of an upgrade.

this is brilliant

two years ago the movie Sydney White was filmed at the small private college I was attending at the time. While they didn't use the interior of the building where i was living (they tried, but the residents complained to the school), they did completely block traffic and functionality all over the campus. it was a nightmare, because obviously we all had to get to classes and such. I don't know what kind of fee the school got, but I hope it was enormous.

i'll adding my dislike of the "look, we have glasses! and look, we have lettuce!" style tour, just in case we're waiting to reach a quorum.
