It's all about commitment and people not wanting to because they don't know if they'll feel like it that day at that time. My boyfriend is kind of like this and when I point out how selfish and rude it is he agrees and we decide yay or nay. And then you know you're going and you get yourself in the mood and muster it together if you're not in the mood. And if it's an event or people that you have a hard time getting in the mood to see or that you'd put below some other event that might crop up that tells you something too.

Party Planning Vent: What's So Hard About RSVPing?

uh... seriously? a gift is the entry fee to a being part of the union of a couple? time to re-evaluate priorities!

that said, yes, a gift is appropriate. but this equating it to cover my "costs" to attend the party that they have chosen to throw and invite me to? bleh. sad. don't invite me.

cooljake - I couldn't agree with you more.

I'm pretty shocked at the registries I've seen for relatively high earning couples in their late 20s/early 30s who have lived together for over a year. It's like it's viewed as an opportunity to get all fresh new STUFF without footing the bill -- "ah, those plates we got a few years ago -- they just have to be replaced with these ones from williams sonoma. and we need enough full sets of cups, bowls, wine glasses, salad plates, dinner plates, dessert plates, etc. for when we have two dozen people over for dinner".

It's tacky consumerism. And I dare add a bit greedy.

I'm a huge proponent of no gift weddings or where you're encouraged to donate to a charity of the couple's choice.

How many people are living here? This kitchen seems huge! Unless of course its 5 people or more.
Very simple storage solution that i have used in every apartment the last 10 years -- the space above the cabinets. It NEEDS to be used. Nice glass jars for flour, sugar, etc. And then big rectangular baskets (ikea has lots of cheap but good looking ones) for other food items.
i don't know what the situation is within each cabinet, but also those little table thingies to add shelf foor area if the shelves are spaced too wide. container store has nice bamboo ones.

Ikea has a variety of clear glass containers that look great. I've had them on my kitchen shelves for years, filled with everything from flour, to pasta, to beans, to oatmeal.

Ya! And no hating on NYC! I certainly cant afford those jars. And I don't see how where one lives dictates what they're willing to spend on storage jars!

Fit for Open Shelving: Stylish Kitchen Storage

People -- budget concious, more focus on privacy than noise reduction, and not something too substantial! Barn doors?! - bah! - Great idea, but they don't meet the criteria.

Anyway, I'm in a very similar situation. The obvious thing, as some have mentioned, is a tension rod mounted in the doorway with curtains. I'm considering this - am I'm looking for curtains that aren't tabs but rather a whole sleeve, so the tension rod doesn't peak through. I'm also thinking about just one pail w/a side hook mounted in the bedroom to loop it over when i don't need the privacy. i prefer to keep it open and the drapiness will look nice i think.

i unfortunately have to do this in a small hallway where the other sides are the bathroom door and an indentation in the wall we've turned into a closet (ah, NYC!), which will also need some kind of curtain. i'm debating if the two sets of curtains (bedroom door and over the closet) should match, etc.

Ok. Clearly a lot of you have not lived in or know anyone who has lived in New York or Boston or Philly etc etc. This situation is quite common in old cities and if you like old buildings you're going to have to deal with it. And ah! - to think I could limit my rental selection based on a DISHWASHER! Crazy.
Moving on to the question at hand. For bathroom appliances (hairdryer is all I think you need) - set up space in the bedroom.
For the kitchen... first really think about the appliances you need in there. Personally I rarely use a food processor, blender, electric mixer, etc. I'm guessing you're living alone so it may not be worth the hassle if you're just cooking for yourself. The microwave (if you even have or use one) can really go anywhere... I once had mine on a bookshelf. It's self contained so there's no kitchen-y mess around it. Just proximity to the kitchen is important
Good luck!
