I think the first is absolutely beautiful. It doesn't look very cluttered to me at all, just colourful.

Adding a Splash of Romantic Whimsy to the Bedroom

Like suburban_war, I live in a place too small to effectively hide my stuff.

I have a treadmill up against one of the kitchen walls, and nowhere else to put it.

I'm sure my guests don't mind the sight of it (and I rarely have guests over), but I get tired of the only question they ever ask: "Do you use it?"

Hmm, that's interesting. I live in South Africa and I always thought kitchen doors to the outside were pretty much standard. Front door goes to the lounge, back door goes to the kitchen.

I would also recommend backing up all your important data.

I always feel like a paranoid person (to be fair, I live in South Africa) when I back up all my photos to an external hard drive and hide it away before going on holiday.

I also used to have a hot water bottle (these days I have my husband and cat to keep me warm) and I loved it.

My grandmother says in her youth they used to use whiskey bottles filled with hot water, wrapped in a towel. I prefer the squishiness and huggability of hot water bottles though.

For me (well, my family) it would have to be the brownies from How to Cook Like Your Grandmother. http://cooklikeyourgrandmother.com/2009/07/how-to-make-perfect-brownies/

This is probably helped by the fact that they're easy to make , and have never flopped, so I tend to make them more often than any other.

Hmm. It never actually occurred to me to put dishes in the dishwasher prematurely. I usually leave the dishes in the sink, often to soak, until I have enough for a full load.

So, with my dishwasher, if there are dishes in it, they're probably clean.

My trick for packing lunch the night before is to make too much food, then put half in a container. Also, I try to do something like bake a batch of muffins on a Sunday and have them for breakfast every day.

And regarding point three - I've found the Pomodoro method works for me.

Could you guys please do (or have you done?) a whole grains round up?

I can't tell the difference between things like bulgur or farro.

I've been eating what's called stampkoring, or whole pearled wheat, in SA and I don't know what it's called overseas.

Is it even important to know the difference, or are they all pretty much the same?

Huh. I did not know any of this stuff, but I spend exactly 25% of my after tax salary on my bond. Although my husband and I live together, which cuts down costs. If I lived alone it would be well over 1/3 if I wanted my own place.

House Poor No More: Determining What You Can Afford

I agree with the "keep on thing clean" rule. I recently discovered cleaning is a lot more satisfying if you focus on one object (like the coffee table) and only concentrate on cleaning that.

Can't believe I only realised that now.

Also, my trick with the washing is: As soon as one load is hung up, to put in the next load immediately, along with the soap. Also, loading the dishwasher.

I don't wash it immediately, but it makes life a lot easier when I can just get home from work and switch those on.

Hmm. I am now utterly convinced I need to find an old ladder. As someone who lays my clothes out the night before, a small external clothes rack would be very handy.

I love this place too.

It's inspiring to know clutter can work!

I was always convinced I'm doomed to live in an ugly cluttered flat until I can afford a bigger place (I can't afford a big place, and I can't afford to turn down family hand-me-downs either) but this gives me hope!

Hmm. Looks suspiciously like a flat vetkoek.

Then again, vetkoek is just deep fried bread dough. Which has risen, unlike frybread.

But vetkoek is made into a ball so that once it's cooked you can slice it open and fill it with deliciousness.

I thought the point of AT was to inspire?

And, to be honest, this place did inspire me because my husband is into music, so I thought the mezzanine closet/studio was a great idea, and the guitar wall.

I think even though the execution lacks somewhat, and most people would do things differently, we should all appreciate the ideas.

I really like the mezzanine studio/closet. Has AT done a feature yet on mezzanine spaces? If so, where can I find it?

I read an article once where they suggested putting the bread slices in a muffin pan, to create little crusty toast cup thingies. But that's probably only viable with sliced bread. Still I thought it cute.

My husband and I moved our bed this way a while ago because our bed faces our TV, so this way, more people can sit comfortably on the bed.

We haven't moved it back because of the space saving.

I've noticed the anti-sideways bed people are those that haven't tried it.
