I posted a post on our favourite family games recently... including heaps of card games and games for little people. Probably our favourite family game is Cadoo... but there are heaps of games by Beleduc that are brilliant for very young players. Here's the link to our game post: http://www.se7en.org.za/2012/12/15/se7en-1-s-favourite-games-family-games-classic-games-and-card-games

We have eight kids and lots of questions about introducing new siblings, some of them closer together than others... I think the most important thing is to make sure that your older child feels like they are still the main player in the party... I always make a point of sitting with them and the new baby and saying how "I am holding all my little ones and how lucky I am to have such special babies." Suddenly expecting the older child to be big is such a giant role change that it is bound to end up hurting!!! I blogged about the questions folk ask here: http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/02/11/se7en-things-people-ask-me-about-siblings

This is such a cute idea - I love it for dress-ups!!! We lacked closet space... but needed the floor space for our daughters dresses so we popped a shower rail behind the door and hung their dresses there (2nd photo down in this post)... http://www.se7en.org.za/2010/08/17/saturday-spot-se7ens-savvy-storage

This was a really easy lesson to learn... The price of electricity in South Africa Sky-rocketed... trebled in less than a year and regularly goes up 25%... We pay so much for electricity compared to what we used to pay that we turn everything off - nothing on standby... we all read in the lounge before bed rather than everyone in their own spot with a lamp. Don't pre-heat the oven and turn it off as you finish cooking... cook more than one dish together... Never use the power guzzler: tumble dryer... Life changing but not that inconvenient!!! Wish we had changed years ago we could have saved real money even when we were paying so much less in the past.

We had such fun this week sorting our stuff, thanks for the great project!!! My best tip is really don't bring stuff into your home unless you really really love it!!! That will save you hours of agony. Cancel party packs, cancel gifts, cancel shopping as an activity... go outdoors instead, and you will seriously have so much less stuff to sort through, it is unbelievable!!!

I live in a house full of readers and I have never held back... our books have been loved to death and then some. I have to say that if you are really concerned don't knock board books - seriously most classic pictures books can be bought as a board book now, they are just not the picture books that they used to be!!! Seriously have a look for the board book option when you are searching for books, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Meanwhile I have found the library books we take out have been carefully covered and sometimes reinforced. When we get a new book I usually cover it in contact paper or at least along the top and bottom of the spine, where they tend to take the book off the shelf to read it.
I recently wrote a post on how to mend our very many over loved books. http://www.se7en.org.za/2011/07/30/how-to-mend-a-book-in-se7en-steps

Hi there from Cape Town, where from time to time a friend will phone in excitement to say we have an ostrich egg don't you want to come around and share it... No thank you, I do not!!! Or worse they are thrust on you unsuspectingly as you arrive at a brunch invitation... Firstly they are not a way to cater for a large amount of guests - chicken eggs work better. You need a drill to get into them, and a whack with a nail doesn't do it and forget silly little thought of piercing the shell knitting needles or screwdrivers. Secondly they smell so strongly of egg that unless you have the strongest stomach you will literally be turning head over heals - well your innards will... and they have a really intense wild taste that only a handful of folk can actually stomach. No pass on the ostrich egg.
There is a reason these birds have lasted so long!!!

When we were kids we stayed with distant cousins who lived on an ostrich farm in Outdshoorn, the home of the ostrich in South Africa. They kept a huge jug of ready to scramble ostrich egg in the fridge and only used the little that they needed for breakfast each day... I always passed - the smell just gets to me...
