We did some home repairs, located and cleaned off the car, cooked dinner and now we're doing Thank You Notes! These are the ones we're sending:

I love to get cards, I usually enjoy sending them, too, but I don't do it every year and I don't stress about it or worry if I haven't gotten a card from someone. This year seems special, since we're expecting a baby - the thing I'm actually the most excited about is sending ThankYou notes (I always do those via snail mail!)
Shameless self-promotion: here are some on Etsy:

they need to be secured really well in order to not end up smashed or teethed on. The local pubs in our area all counter sink screws deep in the wooden frames of their artwork so it doesn't tilt or walk when folks bump into it. I think I'm going to choose 2 eye-level locations in our son's room and try this technique.

As an artist who works with video a lot, I am very familiar with consent or "Talent" forms and I think they're very appropriate *especially* where children are involved. I did a project with an elementary school class, made the request a month ahead of time, parental consent forms were drawn up and every child except for one was able to participate in the video interviews. It's a shame that very real threats force us to be so protective of our children, but of course, we'd rather protect them than not.

The only thing I miss is the lack of exploring. When I was a kid, I could wander about two miles from home at age 9 or 10. Most American parents wouldn't consider that safe now days. I honestly can't decide whether unsupervised "wandering" is safe or not, though I think it used to be.

These all look great and I love the prices! I'm an expecting new mom and I need to know- what are my infant options without going all crazy-Stokke-orbit-$600-$1k? Does anyone have experience with anything that took you from newborn to 3 yrs?

Studio Artiflora in NYC on W28th st is my absolute go-to place. Stephanie, the owner did my wedding (amazing!) and I recently got some arrangements done there for a housewarming. She can always help me even if I'm on a tight budget and her flowers are so inspiring! Word-on-the-street is that Andre Leon Talley just became a big fan. http://www.studioartiflora.com

In my building in Jersey City we have Palmettos- giant, flying 3-inch "Palmettos" (American cockroach - Periplaneta americana). They come into my apartment through a gigantic hole behind the water heater. My water heater is large and square like a dishwasher and because it is filled with water, probably weighs about 300 lbs. I can't move it to get behind it and put up plywood to seal off the hole. I can see the hole with a flashlight and a mirror but I can't reach it. The landlord has already politely refused to seal it up. What can I do to seal this up? Help!

I think this is a fascinating discussion: what amount of square footage per person is considered "normal" or "legal" in the U.S. My father grew up in the U.S. In New York City. He and his brother and sister lived in a 1 bedroom apartment that was roughly 500 square feet. Everyone had enough to eat, was loved, played a LOT (indoors and out) no one was mentally maimed by this situation and each child lived there until he or she got married or moved out. I would caution people not to be classist. "normal" or "correct" should not be associated with what you have, it should correlate to how you treat other people.

Great timing with Spring Break just starting. I'm looking to be inspired by everyone else. I'm getting married in May to my sweetie, so I want our 500 sq foot apartment to be an even better refuge than it already is. We have lots of goals for our abode: We want to cook more, he needs a digital recording studio and storage for four guitars and a keyboard, I need an inspiring workspace for a combination of design and computer work. Did I mention we have a three-legged cat? and some bicycles? Good luck to everyone!

mschatelaine:
Probably you have already done this but
1.) dump cache for your browser and restart safari
2.) try firefox (free download)
3.) back up your bookmarks file and then find the preferences for safari and dump them, restart and open safari again
Safari prefs are in HD> users> home(your user)>Library>Safari folder. before you dump this whole folder copy the bookmarks.plist to your desktop or somewhere else for safe keeping.

Good luck!

I have that same terlet. I just make sure the pipes are always shiny. It looks industrial, but clean and nice.
Also, mine had sheetrock behind with crumbly bits around the pipes, and scratches. So I filled it in, sanded and painted the wall behind it a nice putty color. It makes the shiny pipe and white porcelain look sharp!

You have a great space to start with! I'm in the same boat- my fiance just moved in to our (formerly my) 500 sq ft apt last week. We've been sorting and stashing, purging and cleaning. It was really important to me for him to feel like this space was now his space, too.

My desk is in my bedroom and it's the only space that is off-limits to him for storage. I have a few sentimental family antiques and I offered to store them at my parents' house. I have a lot of furniture that's functioning well (so far) and two giant bookcases that oddly, were not doing a good job, visually, in our tiny living room. We're buying a bed today from west elm- just a frame- no headboard, so that we'll have space underneath for stuff. We're putting up shelves close to the ceiling in the hallway and living room- a trick I saw on AT about a year ago for our books, action figures, pottery, etc. We're replacing a bathroom etagier with more shelves. And he's painted our hallway his favorite color- Benjamin Moore Aztec Brick, which makes a warm, spicy statement as soon as you enter.

I don't know if any of these ideas will work for you but figure out on what terms you want to work it out ahead of time.
Oh yeah, and I also got rid of half my non-furniture stuff (clothes, books, art supplies, fabric destined for projects, etc.)
The best part is that now we wake up together every morning!

LOOKING FOR OCEAN ORB: I'm looking for something I thought I saw here recently: a sealed glass orb with living plants and plankton in it- a mini aquatic ecosystem. Can anyone remind me what it's called or where I saw it? I want to give it to my sweetie for his birthday.

Thanks in advance!

Cptsilver, Please consider donating your DVDs/CDs (the originals) to your local public library. The local branch of my urban library is desperate for good media and they can usually only afford donations.

OMG! So much purple! Still digesting the violets. Not sure if I like it in home decor or anything other than food & flowers... I think I have to watch the video 10 more times to see if the grapey colors sink in.
