My mother in law routinely ships carrot cake with cream cheese frosting from DC to NYC via the USPS and we've never had a problem. I think she freezes it before she ships it.

When I was a server at a Thai restaurant we used half and half. The tea was already super sweetened by the chef. I wish I knew how she made it, but we were always shooed out of the kitchen when it was time to make the Thai tea. It was a family recipe and she intended to keep it secret!

You can steam veggies or any other food in it. I also steam dumplings and stuffed buns in mine. Mine has only one button and it cooks quinoa perfectly.

Do not be afraid to fail.

I have been teaching my husband how to cook and the biggest stumbling block is his constant worry that he will burn/ruin/set the kitchen on fire that it hinders his willingness to try new things and also makes cooking a chore instead of a joy. The best advise I ever read was from Julia Childs' "My Life in France," This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook- try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun.

Growing up my Chinese parents would mix peanut butter with soy sauce and use it as a dipping sauce for meats and noodles when we had hot pot.

We registered for 13 sets (one extra in case something breaks) of Wedgewood china, plus serving dishes, etc, and use them on special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays, showers, etc. There's just two of us now, but we host some holidays for our families and friends and that's when all the dishes get pulled out. I've never needed all 12 settings but since I have a few pregnant siblings I think we'll be running out of plates soon!

I was always under the impression that the lift bowl is bigger than the tilt one and could therefore handle a larger volume of whatever you are mixing. I would also check the strength of the motors on them. That could explain the difference.

Mulchfest is NYC Christmas tree recycling program. You can take your branches to one of the designated parks and the Parks Department will turn it into mulch to use in public parks. You can also take some mulch back with you.

I was working in the US Senate watching everything unfold on CNN. A news scroll appeared on the bottom saying smoke was spotted at the Pentagon. The next scroll said that the White House was being evacuated. The following scroll said the Capitol Building was being evacuated. At that point my coworkers and I realized that we should get the hell out too (technically we don't work in the Capitol Building). We gathered outside as loud booms went off all around us and the news was reporting car bombs going off across DC; it turned out to be the sonic booms of planes from Andrews Airforce Base. Such chaos. I walked home and watched the Pentagon burn from my apartment.

If you contact your state senator you can get a US flag that has been flown over the Capitol Building. It will come with a certification from the Architect of the Capitol that it was flown over the Capitol Building on X date. The flags are high quality with embroidered stars and made in the USA. Generally there is a form on the Senator's website under "Constituent Services" to order one. It's about $20 for a 3x5 and you can get cotton or nylon.

When my in-laws sold their house, in which they had lived for over 20 years, to move to a retirement community my husband and I gave them a pen and ink drawing of the old home as a housewarming gift. It is proudly framed in their new kitchen as a reminder of their former home and all the memories they have of it.
