I'm glad Dry Fly is getting more exposure. I got to sample one of their earliest batches of gin on Christmas several years ago and as someone who, at the time, didnt like gin, it was an opinion changing moment. I ask friends to bring me a bottle or two to me whenever they visit.

Also for anyone in the PNW you can usually get CG cheese at Rosauers Grocery Stores. I really wish I had the foresight to bring a can back with me...

First time I made salsa I went to the bathroom after cutting all the peppers and everything. I was sure to wash my hands a couple times before I went, but I still ended with a burning feeling all over down south. I will never forget my gloves again.

Shishito are great, I grow them on my veranda. Grilled on skewers, tenpura fried, pan fried, in curry, just about any way.

Put them on a skewer, dip them in egg wash, then roll in panko and fry till brown. Thats how they are usually sold at the deli in my supermarket. Pretty good too.

Saba no Shioyaki: Mackerel, filet or whole. Sprinkle a little salt on both sides, leave the skin on and toss on the grill. Take only a couple minutes to cook. Delicious, rich/oily, and cheap.

Did anyone else notice the kid in the picture has not only pudding, but chocolate milk and juice? WTF Sugartown USA. I remember the rare days my parents would give me and my brothers money for school lunch (usually because we were out of lunch bags, or they didnt have time to make our lunch beforehand), we would get a choice of milk or juice and desert was usually a piece of crappy cake or ice milk. Though the rest of the tray was full of either a fruit or salad, a starch/bread item and a main entree

Turkeys are very expensive here. Also, for some reason Japanese families got the impression that fried chicken is a Christmas dish. Ill more than likely be dining alone on TG, but I will attend a big friend get together this weekend. In previous years we had Turkey and all the usual stuff, but also vietnamese spring rolls, makizushi, croquets, and some other random foods.

Nothin like Goya Champloo or goya salad in the summer. For those afraid of a little bitterness try golden goya, they are more rare than the bitter green ones, but really tasty and sweet.

^^^ ew, in humid hot places showering is required daily. At least once.

I did the above method but watered my entire container garden for the whole year. Worked out great. My toilet has a sink in the back tank so no water wasted there either.

You are really missing out, that combo of savoury with the sweet quality of apples is really something wonderful. Like applesauce on latkes or a pork chop, or apples in sausage.
I wish I could walk down to my local grocery and get frozen puff pastry, seems like it comes up constantly on this site, but I cant find it anywhere.

That is pretty weird, I think you would get a lot of odd looks doing something like that in Japan. I mean bringing "my hashi" to work to eat lunch is ok, but bringing them to a restaurant is strange.
For everyday use we have some cheap plastic coated wood chopsticks and a few special expensive lacquered/jewel inlaid sets that never get used, just look nice in their matching box... in storage.

I think if you pan fry them ahead of time and just reheat in the oven it should retain the proper flavor and come out nice and crispy/chewy.

I have a couple large suitcases from traveling back and forth from the US to Japan. My apartment in Tokyo is also very small. I ended up reusing a plastic bag from the bag delivery service to wrap my suitcase, then put it into a cardboard box I had from buying new furnature, then wrapped that in plastic again, and put it on the balcony in a corner. Maybe you could do something like that.

Re: Buda's comment:

Trust me, the fancy over packaging goes much further than the expensive food at Department stores. Plastic wrapped single bananas, Kitkats in a box that contains two individually wrapped chocolates, Box of 20 cookies and each is individually wrapped, single tomato on a plastic/Styrofoam board that is triple plastic wrapped, etc. I love the stance Japan now has on the whole "I do eco" thing, but really eliminating some of the packaging would be much more eco than me simply walking/taking the train everywhere and using a reusable grocery sack.

Oh, and to anyone visiting my fair city (actually I am a Kawasakian, not a Tokyoite, but can literally see Tokyo from my apartment) this summer the Pepsi flavor is Shiso. I strongly suggest trying it. Its like an herbal blast when you first open it. Entry is sweet, followed by a very sharp shiso flavor.
