I use my cats as an alarm system. They aren't a deterrent (big chickens), but they are good about letting me know if someone is around. They woke me up when there was someone outside the door once (in hindsight I think it was a lost, drunk student, but I went out the backdoor to a friend's house!)

If I ever came home and wasn't greeted by them, I'd turn right around and run out and call the cops before going back in as I would assume there's someone else in the place then.

I have 3 cats. I always felt any mouse coming into that environment would have to be suicidal, but in my last apartment we had at least 4 mouse "episodes". One cat wasn't around at the time, one was a pathetic mouser (he finally caught a mouse once, but as soon as it moved, he dropped it), but the other cat was a great mouser. I felt bad for the mice, but... nature at work. (although I was ridiculously relieved he didn't eat them after the kill... *shudder* I don't need to come across that mess)

I have to travel about 3 hours each way to go to Ikea (and usually to Craigslist any Ikea stuff also), but I like the look. I don't LIKE antiques and vintage. I like a clean, modern look and Ikea gives me that at a reasonable rate.

In my experience they have decent stuff AND they have crap (like many places), so it's just a matter of looking around. I adore many of the items from CB2 also, but Ikea is more in my price range at the moment.

I think one of the great aspects of it also is that because it's not as expensive as some other places, you're more willing to try and customize it or hack it. Whereas if you paid $1000 for it, you might be much more hesitant to.

I know a couple like this (although the genders are reversed, it's the husband that hoards - everything, old cardboard boxes, broken blinds, etc...). When they were moving recently, she decided she wasn't moving all the crap. So she would pretend to go to work and then after he left the house she would double back and then take boxes to the dump. He didn't notice during the move (because they can't keep track of all that stuff) and has since started accumulating new piles in the new place.

The apartment I'm moving out of was the first place that allowed me to paint (and I made up for it by painting EVERY room!). I had planned to paint it back to white when I left, but he said to hold off on it and wait till he rented it out. The new tenants said they were fine with the paint job and I could leave it as is. This landlord let me do pretty much anything though, as long as it didn't cost him anything or cause him to have to do anything.

I asked my new landlord about it (even though I actually don't have a desire to paint this one as it looks good with the white walls against all the wood in the place) and he was reluctant but finally said he would want approval of the colors and wanted me to use professional painters so I don't damage any of the wood. Both of which I thought was reasonable. He also kind of seems like the sort to "check in" on me occassionally, so I'd rather not push him much (at least until he's had time to consider me a "good tenant").

dave.darling - we all have our little hobbies or whatever that makes us happy and for some of us that includes buying dvds. Now I can't speak for Johan, but I know I rarely pay "full price" for a dvd (more like $3-5) so your estimate may be quite off.

But even if he did spend $36,000 on movies, who cares as long as he is happy? I think it is astonishing when I see the cost of some of the furniture featured here sometimes, but I wouldn't call those who buy it "gross" just because it's not how I would choose to spend my money.

like everyone else, I love the fireplace headboard. I've got a closed up fireplace eyesore in my place and I wish it was in a location I could put my bed now!

I love all the fluid styles and art here. And that counter top/table thing in the 2nd picture... did you make that? The pattern on top is great.

Like many others, I love the bedroom area. How was that done - are there support beams or something running under the non-storage section? I love the texture of this whole place!

from Nolann: For the black thumbed, just try buying really cheap potted plants and replace them when they die.

That's what I do! I was killing fresh flowers like there's no tomorrow and that was getting rather expensive to keep replacing. The potted plants seem to die slower, so I don't feel they are a complete waste of money when I throw them out (or give them to my grandmother to attempt to salvage).

That said, I wouldn't be adverse to good fake flowers either.

I adore this place! Like everyone else, I want to know more about the shoe box storage/art. That's great! The tv wall is wonderful too - was that freehand or a decal?

I am in awe of you fitting 2 people in that small space and yet it doesn't look cramped or cluttered. Way to go!
