I've done this twice, both with IKEA units. The latest looks high end unless you're fluent in IKEA. It's several Besta units with doors to hide its contents.

They can be seen here:

I was very excited recently to finish our guest bedroom, complete with the quilt my grandmother made for our wedding. My grandmother has a tradition of making quilts for graduations, weddings and new babies in the family. Being the 8th out of 10 grandchildren, it seemed like forever before I had a quilt of my own.

Here's a link to a picture of the bedroom.

They're beautiful, but does the Midwest only consist of Chicago and the Twin Cities?

Joseph Cornell has always been one of my favorites, probably because his artwork reminds me so much of interior design and utilizing limited spaces. Thanks for the post and I'll be looking into the other artists as well!

I would like to see some inspiring laundry rooms with your standard top loading washer and front loading dryer. It seems like any laundry room will look good with the washer and dryers above.

Poison,

Do you think they still have something like that? I'll be visiting the LA area next week and would love something like that.

I made a dining room pendant light (similar to #3) to anchor my dining room, which is open to the entry and living room. I was amazed at how one simple addition could bring the room together. All I need now is a mirror to reflect the fixture and bounce light around the room.

here's a link to it:

I recently DIYed the string pendant. It was difficult, but I love the way it came out. I used a 36" balloon. I originally planned on getting the equator lamp from CB2 (mentioned above), but with budget issues, I decided to have a go at making it myself. The single 60 watt bulb puts out just enough light and I love that it is now the focal point of the room.

Ohh! I'm going to do the modern paper ornaments for our office decorating contest! I might even make a few to hang around the house. I still have time :)

These chairs are the same as my 6 dining chairs that I found on CL with a table and buffet. Are they just Saarinen knock-offs? I love mine and wish I knew more about them.

Sorry to be so late with this post, but what is the white paint you used? I love it.

bb99,
I believe Ordinal Linguistic Personification is considered a variant of synesthisia (yes, I googled).

I may be a mild synesthetic, I don't mix senses, but rather associate genders and personalities to letters, numbers, and colors. When my dad found out, about 5 years ago, he wrote down all their respective genders on a piece of paper and put it in his wallet. He quizzes me on it every now and then.

My coworker, however, has a strong spacial synesthesia. Days of the week and months orbit in space for her. I'm sure she associates color to them as well.

We're both designers, by the way.

No help but, I have that exact light fixture above your dining table except mine has white glass instead of colored. I bought it with a whole dining set from craigslist. The buffet that it cam with looks a lot like yours as well. Are there any origins or stories that you know of?

I was told I would have to rewire my light fixture since it didn't have a ground wire. Did you have to do the same?

I wanted to do this with a bike of mine. First I was going to hang it on my bedroom wall (when I was with roommates), but it would stick out too far. Then I wanted to hang it above my headboard, but I chickened out. Finally, I decided I wanted to hang it above the staircase in my current place, but it would have been physically impossible to do so. I decided to just go ahead and sell the darned thing.

I never really appreciated the concealed shelf until seeing #8. What a great way to clear off your bedside table, but still have your books nearby.

I agree with you, any such name.

Although my worst story is about an Ikea piece, it was human error and lack of space that lead to the frustration.

I have also put together furniture from Target and Home Depot and it just doesn't compare to Ikea in ease of assembly and easy to understand instructions.

Apartment Therapy Chicago | What's Your Worst Furniture Assembly Story?

My worst furniture assembly story was when my husband and I bought the Ikea Expidit bookcase with the TV compartment. I had already put together a regular Expidit bookcase by myself, so I knew we would need a wide open space.

We first tried to put it together in our living room downstairs since it had the most wide open area. After we had assembled it, we discovered that it was too tall to slide up the stairs. Frustrated, we took the bookcase apart and took the pieces upstairs.

Once there, we decided the only place we could put it together would be on top of our queen bed. It was very difficult considering the softness of the mattress and that the bookcase was wider than our bed. After a screaming match and me shutting myself in the laundry room, we finally finished it. Unfortunately, we just weren't strong enough to tilt the bookcase off of our bed and against its designated wall. We had to call my brother and beg him to help us.

Thankfully, he was the additional man power we needed to lift the bookcase as well as some much needed comedic relief.
