I'll comment on the avoiding typical "boy" toys. My mother initially refused to buy any kind of gun (Nerf, pop, cap, or otherwise) for my brother. However, he took my barbies and used the legs as guns anyway (when he wasn't playing house with them) - so my mom relented on the no gun rule. All that really mattered in my family was that we shared our toys and were polite/kind to each other.

For much less than $275 you could buy a really nice down blanket and thick socks and mittens. This is a ginormous waste of money.

I, for one, can't stand the fact that I'm available all the time with my cell phone. My husband and I spent our first anniversary having a "romantic" dinner with our parents calling us several times to wish us well. Sweet, but annoying when you're trying to spend some time alone. I especially can't stand it when people are indignant that you didn't immediately answer their phone calls (after all - they called your cell phone, right?). I'm also careful to never talk on the phone when I'm checking out at a store - I think it's rude to ignore the clerk. In those respects, I could give up my cellphone in a heartbeat.

I like having it in case of emergencies - especially when I'm driving, but I got by just fine without one in high school and college (back in the "dark ages" ten years ago) - and I think answering the phone while enroute is most likely going to be the cause of any emergencies I may have. Besides, here in Texas, on half the 4 hr. drive to my parents' house or the 8 hr. drive to my husband's parents' house, there's no service anyway because we're in the middle of nowhere.

I do appreciate that if you have a cellphone a land line is probably not necessary.

I made a chandelier with my dad several years ago out of a basic five arm model with the lights coming out of porcelain tea cups and saucers with demitasse spoons hanging from the saucers in lieu of crystals (not so much my style any more - I went through a kind of granny chic stage in grad school), but this is right up my alley. If you have access to a drill press, you can order a diamond hole saw pretty cheaply online and (with a bit of water and slow, steady pressure) drill right through porcelain. (I just love how porcelain glows.) I might have to try this - it's so quirky and clean at the same time.

I second Cassis's comment. Anyone have any ideas?

I agree that if the painting wasn't realistic it could work and be pretty cool. I just hate non-working fireplaces - such a waste! Granted, we can only use ours a few days out of the year, but it's worth it.

The alpine bed at cb2.com has a smallish shelf that's unobtrusive - the bed comes in either a dark gunmetal gray or a glossy white - both look really good in person. It's a platform bed, so you wouldn't have to worry about getting a box spring, and it's definitely affordable.

I work for an airline. We get a lot of complaints about the silly things TSA does - they're extremely inconsistent, so don't be surprised if they make you throw out a salad because the dressing is already on it (or a sandwich because it has a spread) - or have you stuff your dressing in your quart sized bag with your lipstick and deoderant. TSA Agents have one of the highest turnover rates, so the chances that you will be encountering someone brand new who doesn't really know the rules is pretty high.

I've always been lucky, but I usually bring single-serving sized items that can't be mistaken for liquids or gels of any kind. Though you never know when someone will think cheddar cheese is a gel. Sheesh.

I'd go with whatever makes you happy since your bedroom should be a place you want to be. I actually really like the orange curtains, but then, I really like warm reds and oranges.... If you aren't sure about the green, you could always add some green fabric to the bottom third or so of the orange curtains to not make it so "orangey" but still keep the warmth. I'd pin the green on first at your desired length and live with it a while before making the change for good....

I really prefer the original tile too. I realize the others are computer mockups, but they remind me of cheap fireplaces in overpriced condos.

If you're moving yourself, I think keeping it intact is fine, as long as you protect the corners and edges. My husband and I just moved a month ago to a new place that is one block away from the old place, and we both have an Expedit - his is the medium size, and my bookshelf is the largest size. We used movers (not a great idea in hindsight) - and although both arrived in one piece and are usable - mine is pretty wobbly now when it used to be very stable. I think the smaller the bookshelf the better in this case since they're composed of so many tiny pieces. (And, of course, the more careful you are, the better...)
