PAINT THEM! They will be gorgeous painted. One of the beauty of old objects is how we reinvent them for use in a modern time. As is they look like they should be in a puritan house full of darkness. The fresh cheerful paint represents your state of mind, your outlook, joyfulness. Free those chairs by painting them!

Please please tell what color and brand of paint of the credenza. I have a painted piano at home that I think I will repaint like that credenza!

I would definately paint the cabinets a warm white/off white and change the hardware! This in itself will make the floor easier to live with. I would also paint the oak trim around that window and put up a pretty, colorful curtain instead of the blinds. Personally, I would paint any exposed oak. I wouldn't do stainless steel--I think in a few years everybody's stainless steel is going to look like everbody's mauve from the 80's. I'd go with bright white appliances and a cheerful area rug.

Regarding the cats: I have two cats, and we had leather sofas. One of the cats scratched it in a small area, but then I bought a spray called "Boundary" and that stopped the scratching. I had to respray the area once in a while, and provide alternative scratching posts in the area. Tell us more about your room and colors. Are you going with the white or off white? I think white or off white are wonderful choices. I might be more inclined to go with white if you are using cheerful colors in the room and the off-white if you have a more nuetral, earthy pallete. If you can sew simple strait lines, then you can make your own, or you could even use no sew tape to hem your own curtains. You just need to find beautiful fabric. Go to Etsy and search for fabrics to get you started. Alexander Henry has amazing fabrics as does Amy Butler. These are just two that come to mind. Also, try Tonic Living online. They sell gorgeous fabrics and they make curtain panel for much less than the Anthropologie prices. I just purchased two Antrhopologie curtains and sent them back because they weren't the same as pictured. they also had a strange chemical smell. I sent them back and then ordered frabric from Hancocks of Paduca and Tonic Living. Good luck!

Hi, I like to keep a nice 3x5 rug in front of the kitchen sink, especially in winter. Another good place is in an entryway. I also wonder if you could put the two together, maybe duck tape them on the back to have one large rug.
