Sorry sciencegeek, acetylene and ethylene are not the same thing. Acetylene (C2H2) has a triple bond, while ethylene (C2H4) has a double bond. The confusion probably stemmed from their IUPAC names: acetylene=ethyne, ethylene=ethene.

It's still probably not a good idea to take your acetylene torch to your apples, though ;)

I hate top sheets, they just get twisted all around my legs in the middle of the night... I've been sleeping without a top sheet since I was a teenager.

Great job Mike! I love the use of the lack shelf as a kitty stairway. I've been looking for a similar solution for my apartment, can you tell me how wide/tall the shelf is when it's installed that way?

I'm a grad student and I needed more space to work, so I built a 88" x 25 5/8" desk into a nook in my apartment using a Numerar countertop, Expedit bookshelf, and Kullen drawer chest from Ikea.

marthalulu:

The largest size of Ikea's Lack shelf is only rated for a load of 18-44lbs depending on the type of wall and fastening. If you have 40lbs and the shelf is leaning out from the wall I would definitely reduce the amount of stuff you have on it, and look at changing the way it's attached to the wall.

You can drill extra holes in the mounting bracket so they line up with the studs in the wall (assuming you have wood stud/drywall walls) and use screws to attach the bracket to the studs, or you can screw into the studs in as many places as you can with the pre-drilled holes and use toggle bolts for the holes that don't line up with a stud.

This is the tech equivalent of Home Improvement's Man's Bathroom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnguL3DwPaM)

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Man's Bathroom was more functional, and better looking too.

That's wicked cool, although I probably wouldn't want to use that system if I had lots of neighbours nearby, as there's no real way to prevent people from overhearing.

To the person who said this person needed to "get some parents,"

My parents always had a policy that common spaces needed to be kept neat and tidy, but my room was my domain. My room often looked like this (or worse) and I grew up to be a happy, healthy, responsible adult.

Chill out.

Sometimes I roast mine over my electric stove with a fork, it works really well. Toasted marshmallows and Petite Ecolier chocolate covered cookies make pretty great s'mores.

Peter Fallico had a wall like the one behind your bed and used it to make a really graphic painted headboard.

From my grandmother (who's still alive and kicking at 92) I got my great-grandmother's piano that was built in 1906, and a fantastic mod chair from the sixties.

From my dad (who died when I was 19) I got a bright red tool chest which I use as a side table, and the giant comfy easy chair where he read the newpaper every morning with the dog in his lap.

I live in a very small apartment, and I have a grand total of ONE drawer in my kitchen, so anything with a long enough handle goes in a stainless steel container on the counter.

I try not to eat anything more complicated than an apple or a granola bar while I'm driving...

I once left a case of Diet Pepsi in the back seat of my car overnight because my hands were full and I didn't want to go back out in the cold to grab it. Bad idea. Temperatures dropped to -20 degrees that night and the whole case exploded. Believe me, trying to scrape frozen Diet Pepsi off the upholstery on your car roof is no easy task...

My Christmas tree.

I live in a tiny apartment with no built in closets and I have a 4.5ft tall Christmas tree (which splits into 2 pieces) that I store above my fridge when it's not the holidays.
