I think there is a definite difference in how a woman will decorate a home as opposed the the way a man would. Using the word "packrat" is unhelpful because it doesn't really describe the difference between the two stereotypes. When people have to make a decorating decision between an esthetic choice and a utilitarian choice, I've noticed that women tend towards the esthetic (and personal) while men will invariably go towards the utilitarian one. The stereotypical "battle of the sexes" over big TVs and stereo speakers in the living room is a good example. As someone else observed, women tend to decorate with "personal" and "pretty" objects while men tend to go for "potentially(?) useful" and "cool" objects. Women also tend to like to use intense colors in ways men would tend not to.

Obviously, these stereotypes are not perfectly universal, but if you go through the recent Smallest Coolest contest entries, it's not that hard to guess whether the owner is a single man, a single woman or a couple.

It kind of reminds me of the eyeball from the creepy Coke Zero commercial saying that it isn't fat.

DWR has it for $500. It's expensive, but not at all out of line with other purifiers that claim to be able to clean 500 ft^2 rooms, such as the Blueair 501.

I like minimal, but this feels "unfurnished", particularly in light of the shabby chic stuff on the right side by (and including) the cabinet. I love the bathroom but I'm glad I don't have to do bodily functions in it, even though I'm single. Take the toilet out (maybe replace it with a urinal?) and I'm there! Making the glass turn opaque would be damn cool as well.

Definitely up there for the top prize. The most amazing thing to me is that even many of those who are apt to say "needs color!" or "doesn't look like anyone lives here!" like it. That's quite a feat. Bravo.

I've had one of these things for about 6 months and despite what it looks like, the thing does actually work. I know because a rich patina of grime appears on it over the course of a week and begs for regular cleaning. Cleaning is as simple as sliding the metal band off and cleaning it with soap and water (it's literally just an aluminium ring) then wiping off the base stand. The ring is constantly electrified, so if you touch it while the unit is on, you'll get a slight shock (about the same as a static electricity shock). Tons of fun if you have cats or kids.

From the "DIY" in the name, I'd guess he's done more than jack with it.

I liked it a lot, especially the lighting and the I'd-never-do-it-but-it's-creative tube shelves. Then I hit the pic with the "futon". I definitely see what you're trying to do with it, but with the rest of the apartment being so geometric, it comes off as "messy" rather than just "amorphous". Otherwise, looks great!

Super cool. I even liked the "bed of death". There's a rail. I'm just not quite sure how you'd get into it from the photo. Do you have to climb onto the desk?

Do you guys often fall out of bed? I've slept on a twin sized bed all my life and I don't think I've fallen out of it once since I was 10 or so.

Loved the test tube spice rack. Otherwise, not really my style.

Star Wars prop replicas, including a Han Solo blaster and 3 full-sized lightsaber hilts, one of which is a wall-mounted, dual-bladed one that lights up and makes noises when you swing it.

I was all set to love it until I saw the bed. Totally ruined the ride. Even so, it looks like a great place.

I looked through all the pictures and could not find the T & A. Talk about false advertising!

Seriously though, Frank is right about it feeling very UES. Not super cool in my book, but it works very well for what it's trying to be.

Cramped as anything, but I love the style of the place. I'm sure I could eventually get used to the "bathroom as wetroom" but it would take a while.

Why are photos and nicknacks the only thing that gives a living space personality? The absence of such things are just as much an indication of personality as their presence. If you're going to criticize it, criticize it for failing to do what it's obviously trying to do, not for failing to be your favored decorating style. Criticize it for being as dark as a cave (that shower is perfect for a bad horror movie) or the absolutely ugly Nelson bench-inspired facade. I don't think anyone lives here yet anyway. The only furniture seems to be an LC4 and Eileen Gray table that keeps moving from shot-to-shot.

I'm just glad nobody's gloating or anything. That's always unpleasant for all concerned.

Lower Westchester represent, yo! I grew up in Mt Vernon and went to school at Iona.

I like it better than most places in the area, but it feels a bit too "8 colors, 8 walls. Which color goes on which wall? Find out on a brand new 'Daneille and Meg Try Color'. Tonight at 8PM".

Michael, you're letting it bother you way too much. The "decorator" types way outnumber the "spatial/architectural" types on AT and in meatspace, particularly considering that the majority of the posters on AT seem to be female (and tend towards the decorator type). Check out the reactions to "Melissa's Pod" and "Gary's Concrete Cell" for some more perspective.

@Blandwagon - more like the follolwing exchange:

Decorator: So blah! There need to be PICTURES!

Melissa: There will be no art. Art distracts from the simplicity of the room and what I really like about the design.

Decorator: But surely I've got to have art and bright PRETTY colors that POP so it can be like my apartment that is SOOOOOOOOOO CUTE and COLORFUL and has PER-SON-AL-ITY!!!

Melissa: No art! You will ruin the angular perfection of the lines! You will destroy the environment I have created here!

Decorator: But how does all this white tell ANYTHING about your PERSONALITY? And where's all your STUFF? It doesn't look like ANYBODY lives here!

Melissa: How about "I like white" for starters? And you saw all the cabinets, right?

Decorator: I need color now or I will DIE of HYPOTHERMIA in here!!!

Melissa: You sicken me.

I really like the look of the kitchen and bathroom area. Has a Nostromo (the ship from the movie Alien) kind of feel. The transition to the living area is jarring though.
