Tilling it seems like a whole lot of work. I'd avoid that if at all possible. Instead maybe aerate and fill the holes with compost? I'd spread clover (or a mix of clover and grass) for an easy grass substitute that works well even in the poorest of soils.

Add a small fountain or bird bath to give all the little critters a watering hole.

larger rocks as a decorative element will also provide insect habitats, which will also provide hours of entertainment for the kiddos.

Actually, the sweet potato vines are quite happy! The cups might appear smaller than they actually are.

Thanks for sharing my project!

Hi! Thanks so much for posting a link to my tutorial! To answer a few questions: several etsy sellers have airplants if you're up for ordering over the internet. Also more nurseries are carrying them as their popularity shifts from kitsch to chic. Ask if they have any "air plants", "epiphytes", or "tillandsias." A good nursery should be able to help you.

Also, if you're afraid to make the investment and then have them die on you, mosses would be another great option. There are some mosses that simply go dormant when they don't get enough water but spring back to life when they do. Mosses would also just require spritzing, rather than taking them out and bathing them. Again, I would recommend a nursery to help you pick the right kinds, of course a walk in the woods to gather some moss would be a lot cheaper and if they don't make it long-term you haven't lost any money on it.

They sell the same kit from Grizzly for much cheaper--and other instruments as well! I got it for my husband last year and he built it that weekend and has been playing it ever since.

I thought their stuff was pretty, but refused to buy anything from them once I found out they were owned by Scotts Miracle Gro--a pretty terrible company, in my opinion.

They look like Hans Wegner designs to me
is this the one on the right?

When his designs became popular, there were a lot of rip offs (that are just as collectible as the originals)--see if there is a sticker with the country of origin.

How about a bamboo tee pee with American wisteria?
Some ferns can grow upwards of 6 feet--incorporate a small pond with goldfish that fills with the over flow of a rain barrel (make sure the rain barrel has a screen over the opening and you won't have trouble with mosquitoes)
plant the ferns around the pond so they benefit from that overflow.
A small pond in the shade will drastically cut back any algae problems you might have.
The wider variety of plants you have, the wider variety of bugs you'll see.
How about a weeping willow for playing under the umbrella form the branches provide.
Also think small scale nooks and crannies where exploring can be exciting.
