Do they have two copies of the same couch, or was it scurrying between rooms between shots?

And for NYC, that outdoor space is absolutely lovely. Everything's relative.

Is the tension sufficient to hold the pictures if you open a window and a strong breeze blows through the room? If not, I could see this being a big mess.

I've had good and bad experiences with Overstock. And I think the rule is, don't ever try to return anything. I only buy if the price is low enough that I wouldn't care if it sucked. So I've gotten some crap sets of sheets that I only keep for emergencies, and I've gotten some great stuff that was a ridiculous steal, given the fantastic quality. Total crapshoot.

I bought a super-thin profile ladder from Home Depot. It's exactly the height of my fridge, and fits in the inch and a half between my fridge and the wall. I use it far more often than I expected to, and that space was dead anyway.

I miss living in Germany. Apartments with this level of architectural detail are shockingly easy to come by.

It seems to me that if you lost any width from the room, it would start to feel cramped. I'd recommend artwork for visual interest, but not furniture. If you absolutely do need some storage/display space, how about a high, narrow shelf that runs the entire length of the room? It wouldn't cut into your table/chair/movement space. If you built it yourself, it could zig-zag just like the wall, which would look pretty cool.

I add to the chorus of people who like the pink. And, if you're going to change it, I vastly prefer the prints you have laid out to the choices in the survey. It's a very serene space, it can afford a little pop of visual interest. With a bright color or pattern, the chair would attract they eye (and remind people to come sit down!).

I'd go for a high-gloss black. It would be visible against your dark wood floors, but not so funky as to be distracting (your wall color is pretty traditional). The high gloss would also make it look like it was "on purpose", instead of a random piece you just sort of wedged in there (which works, in some spaces, but probably not in your particular hallway).

i was just in PB this weekend, and saw this stuff in person. at first glance, it seemed nice, and then, on closer inspection, it just gave me a bad feeling. it was like thinking someone is attractive and then realizing they've had a lot of cosmetic work done and everything is slightly off. the finish felt very artificial, and i wouldn't want one of those pieces in my home. i second blueyes - buy the actual antiques.

it CAN work, but every real house/apartment i've ever been in that uses this technique has felt wrong. most of the time it reduces available floor space and gives the feeling that you've interrupted the residents mid-rearrangement.

I think these are charming. And HBC blankets were _always_ products (iconic products, but still products), so these pieces are just taking design from one product and placing it onto another - very different from a Mao purse.

given the tremendous square footage and open views, the designer did a remarkable job of making the space feel small and cluttered.

the sense i got from the article was that they didn't exactly buy a cohesive "victorian" - it had been renovated many times over the years, and in a haphazard way. so they probably weren't pulling out/tearing down victorian interiors, they were pulling out/tearing down a mish-mash of stuff from the 40's through the 90's. it sounds like they put some effort into keeping what victorian elements remained in the house. and then they chose to make something new from the bones that were left, rather than recreating a victorian. i have no problem with that (it's a totally different situation than someone who moves into a nearly intact victorian in good shape, or even one that needs some work, and guts the thing for no good reason).

my tub had the exact same "stains" - and previous posters are right, they aren't stains at all, they're manufacturer-created texture spots to reduce slip risk. i got the dark color out with soft scrub cleaner, the green/abrasive side of one of those green and yellow sponges, and a whole lot of elbow grease. i really cannot under-stress the elbow grease aspect. i actually did the cleaning while taking a shower (with the shower spray off most of the time, water police), which meant i could really get in there at any angle, not worried about getting wet or getting bleach on my clothes... but the good thing is that now if the spots start to look dark again, it's really easy to give them a quick scrub and they go white again.

before clicking through and seeing that the blue parts on the seat of each cushion were blue embroidery, i thought it looked like someone had sat down on each cushion with an inky rear end. not the look i'm going for in a couch that costs as much as a small car.

many people happen to HAVE columns like that in their apartments - they're structural. could you DIY and wrap a structural pole in the stuff that kitty posts are made out of? jute, perhaps? (obviously you couldn't have one with holes in it)
