The tile format is actually a heath ceramics product.

The 3M works great, but seems better suited for painted surfaced (not wallpaper). Also helps if you pull downwards really, really slowly to release the tape (like when you were a kid and wanted to stretch out that piece of chewing gum). Yes, they are a little on the expensive side, but they work well and are surprisingly strong.

There is also a company out of Canada
( beamer? beemer? 404 area code if I recall ) that makes a very small nailing device. The nails which are the size of dress pins leave very small holes. Stagers use them to minimize damage to walls.

And, though this is a nail-in-wall solution, you could try this product from Home Depot: http://nymag.com/shopping/bestbets/62639/

If you read the article, the true cost was really more like $6000. It would have been $1500 if she purchased the items, did the work herself AND had the wherewithal to know how to put her things together (which she evidently could not, based on the before pictures). I must say I'm a little surprised that as a creative person herself, she was so unimaginative and fearful in her decision making.

"Had she been paying for Mr. Marvin’s services, his bill would have reached as much as $6,000: the $1,500 flat fee for the design, plus $4,500 in labor at $150 an hour. Mr. Marvin estimated that implementing the original plan would have taken 20 to 25 hours, but extensive changes she requested deep into the process added 15 hours." ~ NYTimes

I liked how Ron Marvin put the elements together, but this project seemed more of a "refinement" than a "makeover". Much improved, but essentially unchanged. The results say more about the client than the designer, so in that respect she got what she wanted ....something that wasn't someone else's vision, but a reflection of her own personality: skiddish, safe and somewhat bland.

Interesting and fascinating photos of people in their personal spaces. Love it.

The ping-ponging of assumptions on the part of imperialist AND post-colonialist thinkers in the comments, not so much. (Thinking inside the box, is thinking inside the box, no matter which way you turn the cube.)

Can't you just appreciate that the photographer made a 100 piece tableau of 100sqft spaces without projecting? I actually find it oddly charming and kind of great that the pictures say so much that some commenters could crinkle their noses at imagined smells.

The old stove definitely had charm, but it found a great home with a friend who restores old victorian houses (and had the patience and resources to restore the stove to its former glory).

Wallpaper is from Cole & Son: Malabar. Lots of fabu colors.

Our kitchen is featured in the Fall edition/ Oct/Nov 09 issue of Better Home and Gardens' kitchen/bath remodel mag.

You did a fabulous job! Congrats! I never get tired of looking at it. Hard to believe it ever looked any other way.

When are you inviting me over for meatloaf? (I owe you an invitation too.)

Shame that I drove by the other day and saw that they were closed and sawed a "this space is leased" sign on the window.

Nice mix of Modern and Mid-C without the overuse of iconic pieces (i.e. style recognition over name recognition). I think it's the unique and fun-colored vintage pieces that make the space feel fresh and give what would otherwise be a very "new" loft personal character.

The artwork.....Jessica Fife remakes Edouard Manet paintings?

Great how you used the dark accent walls to frame the "zones". Love the large kitchen tabour door!

Surprisingly modest. Had imagined it to be more fun (like the Eames house) somehow.

Funny, seems to me the art world had declared "authenticity" as its own house pet of a trend just a few years back. HA! It's finally trickled down to design. **snigger**

Simple, Rustic, Charming.
Lovely to see your use of patina as shades of well-worn color and texture. Who needs forced "pops of color" when there's already a richness of color inherent in the materials and surfaces.

Great editorial eye, great remodel.

A really comfortable and inviting space where white is made cozy with accents of dark wood, chrome, and hints of (ie. subtler, more sophisticated use of deep/bright) color. Especially like the contrast of clean white walls with rustic wood planks in the lounge/bar area.

Refreshing upping-of-the-ante on SF house tours and great alternative to the kitsch factor which so heavily surfs the ATSF site in particular!

You don't need to be a plumber to make this (I don't believe this would be connected to your water line, unless you want it to be. That would be a . . . . look, I suppose.) It's just like playing with an erector set. You can make any shape you like! Find connector bits at your local hardware store, measure, cut/connect, screw in.

Interesting idea.

If you can like Jonathon Adler, you can like Jenn Ski. They both make nice things, but they definitely have a derivative feel about them.

I love the idea of mixing eras, but the introduction of new into old seems awkward and obvious here. Feels like two conversations trying to avoid each other.
