one veggie cookbook I discovered recently and absolutely love is Simple Vegetarian Pleasures. it's not too expensive, and every thing i've made so far is delicious and usually pretty easy (though sometimes you may have to buy a few ingredients for the sauces, like sesame oil, for example). it has the best tofu recipe i've ever had: baked thai tofu. you can get the book on amazon for about $15: http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Vegetarian-Pleasures-Jeanne-Lemlin/dp/006019135X

I live in WV, and so our local NPR station covered this issue. After Jamie visited, they did actually make policy changes regarding school lunches. Now they are attempting to use more local produce, and they've pledged not to get food from CISCO anymore. So while the community did seem insulted by the whole thing, at least it seems some good came out of it.

I think the key is just to find a color that complements the warm woodwork color. Laura Ashley makes a great color called light copper that might work well. It's a pale yellowish color with tones of orange, and it really brightens a room without being too obviously a color. I tried to find it online but it doesn't look the same as on the paint chip you can get at Lowes.

I've been looking into this for my kitchen as well. At Lowes I discovered that the standard backsplash is 18 inches, so I definitely think you need to go higher on the non-window walls. One other thing you might consider (can't tell from the pic if it will apply to your kitchen) is how far you want to tile (or apply whatever backsplash you choose) above the oven. We decided to take the tile up to the height of the range hood all around rather than just do a higher rectangle directly above the oven. This makes sense for us b/c we have a tiny kitchen and it won't really be that much more tile, but I think it will help make the look more cohesive.

It's not bad as is but I think it would look more grounded if it were a slightly darker color--maybe an earthy green shade like sage. Personally I think I'd paint the stucco first and see how it looks. I think you may be able to get away with not painting the shakes on the top. It would probably pull it all together if you did paint them though.

it's so fun to see these. my mom actually made one for my sister and i when we were little. it was made from felt and fit over a card table. a much cheaper option for crafty people...
