Yes. I LOVE mine. Fanatically. I'm glad they make them splash-proof now, as they used to short out often.

A particularly memorable meal may find me secreting the menu away afterwards (esp if photocopied), or saving the cork from our wine...

Best shot ever: Waialua estate tasting room in Hawaii (North Shore, Oahu). Hadn't had espresso in 4 days, and it was fresh crema heaven. The fruitiness and deep chocolate flavors are locked into my brain now. I never do straight shots, usually lattes, but this was the smoothest, creamiest, sweetest shot I'd ever had.

Seconding Deborah Madison's book. I have not encountered a bad recipe in there. It was a gift from a friend, and it has become one of my most favorites since moving here to the PNW, where we eat soup year-round...

I love my neighbors! They're one of the reasons we made an offer on our house. Jerry, who lives next door to us is amazing -- a little talkative, but warm, and mellow, and knows so much about our weird lil' neighborhood. On the other side is a cute sweet young couple with a great yard and a sweet dog (and great taste in music). Best thing is, we're all friendly, but we keep our distance. I plan on living here for 30 years or more, so we're starting off slowly with socializing too much. Let the friendships develop over time, y'know. Boundaries are good with neighbors.

I grew up in a house with a gas range and double electric ovens- and I must say that *that* is my preferred configuration. But I have no choice out here in the boonies of Seattle, where there are no gas lines in my neighborhood anyway. I'd have to get 20 of my neighbors to sign up for service before they'd come out here anyway. Sigh.

Electric oven- with convection, which I adore. Heats up fast and is accurate!

We bought an Electrolux ICON dishwasher when we bought our home a year ago. We didn't pay $1000 because we bought a discounted floor model, but yes it makes a HUGE difference from the two lesser dishwashers I've experienced. Tackles baked on food no problem- and it can hold my gigantic cookie sheets and trays due to it's grooovy adjustable rack. It delights me every day still!

Made this last night- strangely enough I had all the ingredients on hand already. I used less lamb, but added an equivalent amount of dried chanterelles and other wild mushrooms, along with some fresh mushrooms. It was really delicious and satisfying after a long night on my feet, not to mention the heavenly aroma permeating the house after slow cooking all day. Thanks!

Mr. Faux- MFK Fisher grew up in Whittier, but her family had a ranch in Hemet that they spent a ton of time at, according to a biography on her I read recently.

Aww- way to restore Hemet to some of it's previous luster! my grandmother lives there (actually in Homeland) and I've always heard tales of old time celebrities having ranches out that way back in the day (M.F.K. Fisher, for one). I'm guessing it becomes the "new Palm Springs" someday!

I've been using date syrup as a sweetener in my baking. I just puree dates with water until it has the consistency I am looking for. Great for throwing in hot cereal, stews, whatever needs a touch of sweet.

I just bought a Breville (lightly used for $75) and have been juicing every day since! My current favorite is green kale, apple, pear, ginger, and turmeric root. Sometimes I throw a couple of garlic cloves in there too, since it's so good for you, and you can't really taste it, just a slightly savory aftertaste. In fact, I should go make some now!

Wow! Who knew that a little pastry charity would spark such controversy? I was inspired to participate in my city's vegan bake sale thanks to this post. As a person of modest means, donating a tray of vegan brownies that cost me $3 to make and having them go for $30 seems like a much bigger help then my cash would get. Plus, people get to eat delicious food. It's win-win, as I see it.

langostino: treat em just like shrimp. the coconut milk can be used as a poaching liquid. If you've got some thai curry paste: perfect. whisk the two together, add some pineapple, red pepper and the langostino. Serve over jasmine rice. or you can mess around with what ingredients you have. but i would hang around southeast asia or the tropics, flavor wise.

*I* will be practicing my mayonnaise by hand this weekend. hope my arm holds up.
