The candle is used to heat the glass and then you cool it with ice - the temp contrast finishes the break.

Man, why is everyone being so harsh? I think it's a fun project for $5. And at $5 who cares if it's not permanent?

Hey i posted a comment a minute ago and then is disappeared. (sorry if it reappears)
Why GOOP? What does that stand for?

Maybe someone somewhere has already answered this, but why is it called GOOP?

I'm not trying to be a downer, but a year old! I know this happens w/modern sofas (based on some previous AT posts), but I have a hand-me-down from my grandma and it still looks great.

Does anyone know why these new expensive sofas fall victim to this? Is it the fabric? Does anyone have a suggestion of a modern sofa that doesn't do this before the 5 year mark? Eventually I will want to replace mine and I definitely want the best quality for $1,500-3,000.

Yikes. I am with the original poster and DrRubyDoomsday on this. I have a collection of DVDs that I love. I also have a lot of books and records and routinely let people borrow them. Why is it bad to surround yourself with these items if you have the space?

Also, to those that back up their movies... I hope you also backup your backups. It would be a shame to lose everything. (I am in no way against people that chose to keep their movies digital. I wish they could have the same respect for those of us that don't do that!)

It would be nice if every media storage post on AT could actually contain links for attractive media storage.

Here's an example of what it could look like:

I just googled "mission style fabric ottoman" so I'm sure there are better examples out there. Good luck!

Like JoanneM, Columbus (OH) bans them for the same reason. Well, I'm not 100% sure if it's city-wide, but I do know for a fact that it isn't allowed on campus.

Modge Podge does create a kind of sealed layer, but I'm not sure if that's water tight. Anyone know for sure?

I like this idea. I wonder how it looks up close and how it will hold up.

haha posting again! That last part sounded like I have a stick up my butt. DVDs, books, whatever else is all fair game to a guest. I basically agree with the people about computers and personal items like bathroom stuff or any drawers.

I might add, if someone is dog/house sitting for me I tell them to make themselves at home... otherwise, I like being an attentive hostess. Get comfortable, enjoy yourself, but please don't go through my things without permission.

I'm having this issue with my boyfriend's mother. I bought a house in December and she has definitely taken to making herself at home. Within the first two months she came in from out of town and stayed the night every other weekend. Since my boyfriend did not pay for half of the house, and because we are not married, boundaries needed to be set. While she still makes herself at home in the kitchen (not too big of a deal since I'm not a cook), she now stays in a hotel.

Wah wah. So what if you're not supposed to mix? I think your home looks great. Do what feels right. I think it works here.

I, too, have a white couch and a dog. My dog is really small, so he can't do much damage. But when he is on the couch he stays either on my lap or lays on a large pillow or on a blanket. I can't say that he ever voluntarily sits on the couch without some kind of cushioning. Maybe you could train your new dog to have a similar manner? As long as he/she doesn't plop on there after coming in from the mud I think it will be ok.

As for slipcovers v. upholstery: Remember that you have a lovely and expensive couch. If you are anti slipcover, practice upholstering on a chair first, then tackle the couch! Just in case! ;) Good luck!

My boyfriend's mom make matchbooks like this for every holiday, though she doesn't add a magnet to the back. I like this idea, but I'm so clumsy I'd probably put them on the fridge slide-y way down and they'd get all over the place. ha

I, too, want to know about this drawer unit. The closest I can find is the ALEX from IKEA... but it's not good enough.

I have a little box for them. It's dark wood, square... I have no idea why I bought it, but it became a remote holder over time.

I like LauraE's idea of a taller TV cabinet. However, since your TV stand looks like it is in great condition, how about adding a wall shelf above the TV and displaying the matted prints you have leaning against the wall in the second to last photo?

I am also in agreement that a great rug (or two) will add a lot of interest. Rugs can be expensive, but I think they are worth it... especially if you can't paint.

If you're allowed to hang a curtain rod, adding one in the dining room with some colored curtains will add height and some drama and make the dining room a bit more formal. Plus, you can take it all with you when you move.

Finally, large floor vases with tall dried botanicals could make a big impact (and repeat the effect of your vase on the mirror table). Even a cluster of 3 to the left of the couch would add some height to the room. CB2's selection

I think the bones of your room are good. Safe, yes... but it's a great start!

I understand the look you are going for, but my back aches thinking of that mattress. I slept on a futon mattress for about a year when I lived in a studio apartment and I think I'm still having lower back problems as a result (I'm in my early 20s!)
