wear and tear and having the wood come through from traffic is the beauty of it all!

It's cheaper to repaint than to buy new carpet, no?

What I love about this space is you can tell the items were carefully chosen and I bet their thinking was "if it'st not a great piece, we don't want it" which is the right mentality for small spaces. Every piece has to count because when you don't have the room to clutter you have to be picky and choosy.

thumbs up!

I would not recommend painting the fireplace black. This will make your small space seem exactly how it is now. If you are looking to clean up the space than white washing it will do the trick. I would also suggest either building up a hearth or finding a tall enough screen. You see how your screen doesn't meet the top of the fireplace? It's probably not serving it's purpose like this anyways. I would also recommend replace your screen with a more modern one to update it with your new kitchen. I can't exactly tell in hte photo how well your clearance is between your table and the hearth but if you have enough space building it up could look cleaner as well. It seems to only be one brick length.

There are modern screens that are just a single panel instead of three sections that look great.

here is a flat one from restoration hardware its not as modern but its a flat one panel, choose a finish like the satin nickel not the wrought iron finish.

Someone recommended putting the tv in the fireplace and I believe there is a photo of this being done floating around the internet somewhere but mind you this can only work in certain instances and has to be done right, i would not recommending going this route.

A mantel could work depending on what you are placing on it. If you are going to jumble it with picture frames than it's going to look cluttered in front of the busy brick. If you plan on placing a collection of off white vases than it will stand out in a good way.

Hope this helps

Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Suggestions for this Fireplace?
4/7/09 11:07 AM

I'm not sure if my first posting made it; so here it is.

Two main things going on here. You have obtrusive walls. I would suggest lightening them up a bit, actually a lot. The room may seem cluttered simply for the fact that walls are so harsh. Secondly, you have furniture styles and fabrics that are working against each other. You have a modern scandinavian-ish/perhaps Ikea chair with a traditional chair and sofa and a heavy coffee table sitting on a shag. Perhaps the green walls were meant to accent the fireplace but I feel it distracts you from that detail instead of drawing your eye to the tile and letting the tile act as a detail.

I personally would love to see the walls lightened to an egg shell color and the traditional chair and ottoman re-upholstered in a brown leather. I like the desk and chair finish and would suggest placing art work above it.

This room is supposed to be for relaxation but its more stressing you out than calming you.

I would also suggest decorative touches to the tops of the built-in book cases. Apothecary jars clustered together are really in right now, perhaps some great muted pottery and of course a center piece on the table.

hope this helps

PS. the placement of the furniture is great in my opinion. It opens up the flow of the room and every seat have a view of the outdoors. Ir re-arranging the furniture is a must I would put the sofa infront of the window and put lighter pieces closer to the entrance. You don't want to place a huge sofa right as you walk in as to cut off flow and block circulation.

what is your decor style? what color palettes are are you using elsewhere in the room?

since the chair is so large; if your space is small don't use a bright color unless the rest of the room is muted colors than the chair can become the focal point in a good way.

For reading chairs like this one I feel you can never go wrong with a woven. they are heavy duty fabrics and I am a fan of texture.

I am a fan of contrasting woods; so depending on the other woods in the room, the feet could stay the same or be refinished.

I am sure you love your scrap pile table but personally I would choose something other than wood for the table paired with some type of mismatching of chairs in assorted colors etc. There is so much wood in this room. All I see is tan and wood. I am not usually a fan of a rug under a heavily used dining table but in your case I would make an exception and would suggest like someone else's post of using Flor tiles b/c they are easy to remove and clean.

I always like to bring out some of the colors from the art work but lighter hues of those colors. the windows could be softened up by a light airy drapery. I would do a solid perhaps woven wool or linen. If the window get a lot of direct sunlight remember to film your windows and/or line the drapes. A simple wrought iron rod and ring system would do the trick and combined with a cream or off white drape would really work wonders.

I realize that you are probably a fan of your wood window framing but a good way to soften the room up would be to get rid of them or paint them. They are breaking your room up and making if feel bulky/chunky and combined with the chunky dining table you've got two things working against you.

the light fixture could stand to be updated as well. I would choose something light in material. Especially if you dont want to paint or get rid of the window framing; definitely spruce up the lighting.

A terrarium, or some type of organic table setting would help as well.

I didn't read everyones posting so perhaps some of what I mentioned has already been said but hope this helps.

There is a Company called The Shelf Shop that might help. They are located here in the NY area; I believe it's shelfshop.com.

Depending on how much you are wanting to spend there is also atlaseast.com. These guys aren't DIY but they are a great system; they produce exactly what you are looking for so maybe if you get frustrated with trying to tackle this project on your own you can resort to them.

The great thing about antiques are the charm of their character. I would recommend not touching it. It could lose any value it has if it is touched.

As far as how to display it. I like to display antiques on a clean backdrop. Almost reminiscent of displaying a fine piece of art work in a museum. I'm not sure how this goes with your contemporary decor contemporary can be good and it can be bad. I would be interested to see it paired with maybe the Spun standing lamp and a great 20th century modern arm chair, which you can buy relatively cheaply at like White Furniture and maybe some sort of small side table from Adrianna Shamaris.

Maybe this mirror inspires you to re-think your whole decor. Mixing the contemporary with old and modern .
