My family has a house near Mexico City and it's filled with awesome tile. Some of it is very baroque like the patterns above and the other designs are more simple and modern-ish. I wish there was an easy way to being them into the US, the prices are much more affordable down there.

I've been lazily composting for the past ten years and the Biostack has been my favorite method so far. It looks nice (okay, not so obtrusive) in the garden, which is really important as my garden is quite small.
I started using it about 6 months ago. I kept adding stuff (mostly expired veggies and garden cuttings) to the top and eventually it all decomposed. I just turned over the stack (it finally reached the top) and had finished compost on the very last stack. Very nice compost too! I kept it right next to my worm bin and I think some of them migrated over to the Biostack because there's a ton of critters in there too.
Oh yeah, don't forget to water inside the bin, it helps speed things up!
I use the mulch from the Griffith Park yards on my garden pathway. I'm a bit wary on using it in the vegetable garden but perhaps I should add it to the compost bin...thanks, for the good idea!

I love outdoor living spaces but my problem is dust and dirt. Everything gets filthy. Perhaps it's worse here in Northeast LA, we still have lots of natural hills (yay!) and perhaps more dirt floating around the air.

I was kinda thinking the same thing as Trumystique when I read that bit of the description.

I'm really curious, what neighborhood do you live in?

Be careful with the boiling water, it "burned" my sink! I live in a rental furnished with the cheapest materials possible and the new cheap sink in my bathroom didn't hold up to the boiling water/vinegar/baking soda mixture. It's nothing too horrible but it did leave a raised mark. I'm sure a quality or porcelain sink will hold up fine.

Lots of Mexicans (like myself) like to save our mole jars, they make great juice glasses.
My fav re-used jar is a "Chinese Honey" jar I bought at a local Asian foods store. It's adorable! I use it in my bathroom for q-tips.

Actually, I think they pay homage to Mexican Loteria cards.

Ah, c'mon no need to hate on working class people trying to make a little money. The city is able to waste lot of money by themselves. You want to know how your tax dollars get sent down the drain? Talk to a city worker.
In regards to the recyclers, I would go with the last suggestion. I've made friends with most of the collectors in my neighborhood. There's so much competition, that I keep some of the stuff inside until they come for it. It's a two-way street, they get the cans and bottles and I get all the neighborhood gossip! :)
I do shred almost anything that has my address on it though. You never know who will use these things somewhere down the line.
