But you're not giving up your secrets on the cat living in harmony with the tv?

I love the new arrangement. The book cases do look cozy, and give the room architecture. I understand the tv in front of the window, it's also my best choice. I could get fancy and hang it elsewhere, but the reconfiguration of the whole room would then leave something else wanting. But my biggest burning question is, how do you keep the cat from jumping on the tv? I lost a tv 3 weeks into owning it, because a cat knocked it over. Then I anchored a new one to the shelf it's on, and the cat tried jumping on it again. This time, it survived, but barely. Is there something I don't see in the photo? some trick you have?

I agree with a lot of what has been said. I do see the merit of being mindful of what is in your home. Like the person who just posted "after" pictures of her living room that she'd asked for help in redoing. She did find less worked better in the room.
On the other hand....there was something so, I don't know, ego-centric about this article. As the commenter above mentioned, not everyone can put big holes in the wall. More to the point, I am holding off on buying a flatscreen until my box actually dies. I have an issue with being spoiled, and running out for the next best without a thought about landfills etc...But maybe that's just me. "Just hang your tv." I'll get right on it. And on that note...I also use linens instead of paper. I think you have to be somewhat of a throwaway consumer to be a minimalist. I have one tiny closet in my whole house, not even a linen closet, so, yes, I am going to use my antique dresser passed down to me. And love it. And be grateful for it. And finally....when I have company, I will encourage them to put their beverage or snack on one of those awful clutter collecting end tables so they will feel accommodated and comfortable. Sometimes minimalists are so minimal, they forget other people exist.

This is how inspired I was by your question: I finally registered to leave comments...I'm in the don't paint camp. It's not an every day room...it's a guest room, a dorm room even. The wood would add to the feel of being away. It's not like everyone else's up to the minute design blog room, which makes it special. I would change out other things that are less permanent, like the carpets. I'd also consider hanging sheer white curtains all the way across two walls above the window. So, they wouldn't necessarily cover the walls entirely, but they'd add a big bit of brightness. You could even drape a sheer white or colorful fabric over the beams that may add more brightness.
