What's with the haters hating on homeowners for having money and spending it? Remember that there are a lot of people who have money and decorate big, ugly houses in big, ugly ways. This couple may or may not have money but they definitely have taste and have created an awesome mid-century modern space that I'm pretty sure would have gotten rave reviews if not for the evidence of money spent.

I love it. Looks great. I'd love to live there. :)

My kitchen has white cabinets, black honed granite countertops and white subway tile backsplash, all by choice via a remodel when we moved in. I love it! The countertops are my favorite. They wear really well and clean up beautifully. With a basic black and white backdrop you can brighten things up with paint on the walls or bold items on the countertop and a cool rug to cover the tile (which is my least favorite element in your kitchen).
Should be easy and cheap. We DIY'd our subway tile backsplash and it was really inexpensive and looks great.

You maintained the unpretentious spirit of the Craftsman movement, while ignoring any stylistic dogmas. Your home breathes freedom, peace, and spontaneity. Without having met your family, I can already sense your colorful personalities.

I agree completely and couldn't say it any better! But I'll add: I rarely comment on home tours because the homes often come off as contrived but this home is completely *not*. It just flows!

I agree with Loora. While the kitchens are all aesthetically pleasing, I have a visceral response to all of the items on open shelves. I look at those shelves and feel pressure to start dusting all of the bowls, bottles, appliances, books, and knickknacks.
While my kitchen isn't exactly a showplace (though it's recently DIY remodeled and pretty great) and certainly has some items on countertops, I can't handle more than fruit, veggies, the compost bucket, knives, toaster, and a container of most-used spoons and spatulas out of the cupboards.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not a fan of the shelves vs. cabinets trend.

Hands down my favorite kid's room of all time, on this site or any other. Totally perfect in every way. Although I have to say I was a little thrown off by the "Goodnight Moon" "Goodnight Gorilla" "Trucks that Go" books all on a shelf together, like, "This is where books that have G-O in the title are kept."
But yeah, love each element in this room on its own and love it all together.
Thanks for sharing your great room and darling little Oliver!

The blog response didn't change the way I feel. People were mean and rude and bullied her, but I still think she may have made some bad choices. I mean, in most houses--it sounds like even in hers!--we lock up the cleansers, so it's worth voicing concerns when a toddler's bed is positioned below an open shelf of cleansers.
All of us are humans, and fallible, and should be okay with having our (possible) mistakes pointed out to us, but in a way that's not cruel. It's an online forum--that makes it our business.

atarichamp: it's not a matter of caring more for people's kids than they do. There are times when all of us make oversights and errors in judgment and there's nothing wrong with someone--a stranger, even, in an online comment thread--pointing it out in a kind way.

I think that criticism suggesting to a parent that they don't let their kid sleep in dangerous situations is about as constructive as it gets! Again, it should be phrased in a non-jerky way, but I disagree that input should only be design-related.

While I don't encourage or excuse snarky or jerky comments--"sadness in a comment box" is right--I agree with the principle behind voicing concerns about safety.
I didn't see the laundry room/nursery post so I don't know how accurate it is to say that the bleach was "balanced" over the crib, but bleach over a crib, or a dangling cord from blinds in the playroom, or an infant's crib stacked with decorative pillows or mounds of stuffed animals are worth mentioning. Sure, it could be staging, but why stage something to look dangerous? If my son's room's featured, I'm not going to whip out the kitchen knives and array them on his changing table. If a room shown here isn't safe, it is automatically worth mentioning; it's not an accusation that the decorator is stupid, but an opportunity to bring up something that's important.
The way I see it is this: if the kid sleeping in the laundry room got the bleach off the shelf and burned him/herself or drank it or discolored the sheets or did whatever we're worried the bleach would do, we'd feel pretty crappy for not having brought it up.
We just need to do it in a friendly way. And that's what I think this post was addressing.

I have the volcanic popsicle molds and I heartily recommend not buying them! They have that big hole in the center which is supposed to be filled with some kind of something... I never fill it.
Overall, you end up with very little popsicle to eat and an awkward hole in the middle. Also, the stem on one of them broke the first time out.
Cute, but not so functional.

Oh, and as far as what we do out on the road: I hold my boy up so he can pee from a standing position in potties, or he stands by a tree if we're in the woods. And we just hope he doesn't have to poop, because that's a 30 minute affair and I refuse to wait around that long when we're out and about.

We have the Lattsam and I can't imagine how big your boy's twig and berries would have to be for them to get squished. My 26-month old is tall and heavy--40" tall and 36 pounds--but he fits just fine on the potty. He just points his thingy down and pees.
One caveat: because our dude is so big and only poops once a day, the Lattsam's receptacle can occasionally be too small, allowing things to, er, stack up and touch my boy's undercarriage. Other than that: love it. $4 (or less) well-spent.

I agree that more storage space would be good, but I also agree that more of the cabinets you have currently wouldn't really do anything for the overall look of the kitchen, and they'd cost a lot of money.
I think if I lived there, I'd use the space for storage, but with some kind of great-looking storage bins (with lids) in a uniform color and/or pattern. It would help define the look you're going for, give you more storage for stuff you don't need to get at often--documents, tablecloths, etc.--and fill the space without resorting to some goofy, country-kitchen collection.
Container store has some good bins in cloth and fiberboard.

Use these for purchasing and storing bulk foods! For example, at our local Whole Foods, I have my containers (jars, bags, etc.) weighed at customer service on my way in, and the weight is noted on the container. Then, I fill each container with bulk foods--rice, granola, flour, salt, honey, you name it--and voila! Everything is already in its own storage container when I get home, so I can just label it and put it in the pantry.
I can't recommend this highly enough. You'll be able to reuse your containers, and avoid bringing new ones--bags, boxes, etc.--into your home!

sar3j, while I was pregnant with our son, my husband and I were stumped for a classic, not terribly popular boy's name. I think we managed to find a name that filled the bill perfectly: Simon. (Middle name is Oliver, a family name, just in case Simon doesn't like being Simon!) It's hovered at around the 250th most popular name with Social Security for the past 20 years, it's easy to spell and the only "famous" Simon is Simple Simon, which is relatively obscure and pretty harmless. (Also, "Simon says," but who cares?) As for that horror Simon Cowell from American Idol (which people ask me about sometimes): I don't watch that show, so it's not at all on my radar!
And to boot, my Simon has turned out to be the cutest, sweetest little boy in the world! So there's at least one great Simon running around out there...

like a lot of the other posters, i find my son is fascinated with the remote control and cell phones. we recently retired our tivo, so Simon (my son) now has that remote--a real one!--of his own to do i-don't-know-what with.
he also loves paper:receipts, shopping lists, mail, etc. he likes to lick and chew on it!
his favorite household items are chairs and stools. he doesn't crawl yet, so he scoots around to get under the furniture, pull up on the bars, and push the furniture around the room. he's my little strong-man!

I agree with k8theriver! I would have liked to see the big "s" room in there, too. Also, I really loved the one with the primary colors that had the triangular-shaped alcove/closet. That said, the first place room was one of my favorites, so I was happy to see that it won!

On a related note, Simplicity's 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 bassinets have also been recalled. I had one (hand-me-down from a friend) and was able to return it to Babies R Us for a store credit with no hassles. Honestly, I was relieved to return it--I didn't care for the look of it at all!
