We aren't allowed to throw them in the trash (or put them on the curb) here; they have to be taken to the Solid Waste Authority to be disposed of safely.

I always save my potatoes that are starting to sprout and plant them in the garden. They always produce - and there's nothing like homegrown new potatoes! Ditto for pumpkin and pepper seeds. I've had less luck with cucumbers and tomatoes.

idontdobeige, I think the wiring restrictions you describe are common throughout Europe. I never saw an electrical outlet in a bathroom the entire three years I spent in Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Austria, Germany, or Spain. It took me a loooong time when I came to the US to get used to the idea of plugging in my hairdryer in the bathroom!

Home body, as an earlier poster noted, many of them are not actually nearly as permanent as you think; they often slide down over a metal bracket. Mine are a piece of cake to slide off and scrub clean.

We live in nowheresville and craigslist is usually nothing but junk, but every now and then I stumble on a gem at a used furniture store 20 minutes away. I found an original butcher block there a couple years ago and they were even great enough to deliver it (took a heavy duty appliance dolly to move it!). I love it every single time I walk in my kitchen.
