@bepsf: hi, I'm the guy who did this little IKEA hack; I actually went back and re-anchored the shelf, and it's really solid. Since then, I swapped out the old PC with an iMac, which is heavier than the monitor shown here, which is why I beefed up the anchors.

I see a few of you have painted your cabinets before. Does anyone have any good pointers on how to DIY it right? I'm not new to fixing up my house, and have painted every room by now, but I've got these awful 1970s particle-board cabinets and no money to remodel, so I'm resorting to the poor man's remodeling tool: a fresh coat of paint.

As for the whole resale value issue, as some have said, let's face it... especially for the areas Apartment Therapy caters to (LA, NYC, etc.) we've been hit hard by the housing bubble and most of our apartments/homes are effectively worth squat for the next few years, so we're stuck with them. I say we embrace that, and turn our abodes into places we love from the moment we walk through that front door, resale value and bad economic news be damned!

Wow, I was thinking of painting my kitchen just like that orange in the top picture. And having seen what it looks like on a real kitchen, I'm totally gonna do it ;)

Nice, and that looks like something anyone with any crafting skillz could rip-off and DIY on the cheap, too. And it looks like everyone at Radius drives Volkswagens. :p

I actually got the idea from an old post at Apartment Therapy, so I guess it has come full circle by appearing on part of AT!

After putting the rest of the music gear, especially a large drum set, I'm even more glad I decided to go with this space-saving shelf/desk.

Here's some promo video that shows it in action. Kind of required.

That said, it looks neat, but I'll stick with a more function-over-form clock, thank you. I can't sacrifice waking up to music from an MP3 player. :p

Wow, I would never try to block out sounds at night with my fan. I live near railroad tracks, and hearing the trains pass is very comforting!

I always drink a glass of cold water before going to bed, and usually sleep pretty well.

Alarm clock with Zune in the dock for tunes when I wake up. Glasses when I got to sleep. And nothing else :)

The keys, phone, etc. all go where they belong (at least for GTD fans): on the "landing strip" shelf located just after my front door!

I just did the desk idea the other day. I replaced a huge desk with one of these shelves, stuck a slide-out keyboard tray and wire caddy underneath, and voila!

I'm going to go with gimmick on this one. I cannot come up with a reason for having to pack up your dining table, even in the smallest of apartments.

Maybe when they start offering green furniture, etc., they can forget about the $1 plastic bag guilt tax and just eliminate plastic bags altogether? hejiranyc: I second your comment. Veggie Swedish meatballs, anyone?

I'm definitely leaning toward "another piece of unnecessary plastic". Realistically, if you're going to keep appliances unplugged when they aren't used, you don't need a little hook to remind you to do so. And if you do need that reminder, you aren't likely to go through the trouble.

I only do this with energy wasters that I don't often use, whose plugs are easily accessible; e.g. the microwave, toaster oven, etc. are always unplugged, and I plug them in for each use.
