a tsp or so of anchovy paste, and tomato paste is all you need to get that added depth you're missing - chicken stock or boullion cubes, garlic, and onion are all excellent additions too. good luck!

I'd check the ingredients to be positive, but I think smoked almonds would be a good veg substitute to sub in for the bacon and the pecans

SkyMall was the inspiration of the best received xmas gift for my dad two years ago - a solar powered clamp on grill light. saw it in SkyMall and then googled to find one for a great price.

please post an update with reveal! so cool, and hope the stripper suggestion works. i've used Peel Away on wood with amazing results (minimal smell, super easy to remove 5 coats of old paint) and went with a plastic scraper and rough bristle toothbrush.

what about bleach? when i was younger there was a holiday craft project where we would strip the metallic paint from the insides of round christmas ornaments and then fill them with mini snowmen, glitter, etc. i'd imagine you could give the same treatment to your lamp.

to all the tube polenta people out there - honestly, skip it. it really doesn't take much longer to make polenta from scratch (look for cornmeal or even yellow grits if you aren't finding polenta in grain form at your supermarket).

i've tried the tube polenta and while it is good if you want to fry up some firm cubes of polenta, the real polenta flavor is not there. if you are trying to re cream-ify it, don't, you'll be disappointed! the real deal is the tastiest, and honestly is pretty hard to mess up!

Brooklynnina - if it's just the polenta he's adverse to, try subbing pasta for the polenta. Earlier in the week I popped the mushrooms in my toaster oven because I didn't want to heat the whole kitchen with an oven and tossed the mushrooms with some rigatoni (and egg) and just shaved the parm over the top.

hyperRevue - all I had on hand at the time was white button and they still tasted amazing (due to the roasting/salt/spicy pepper flakes) but this would work with any mushroom you like.

The egg thing is a funny coincidence... I know I'm always adding some kind of egg on top if I do a veg main course just to have the protein to make it feel like a meal, but that is just me.

re: mixing in peanut butter - when freezing the ice cream straight out of the maker I alternate a thin layer (have done this with caramel) so it almost looks like a parfait, but when you scoop the ice cream you will have the ripple effect. If this is not 'mixed in' enough, you can barely swirl the layers before freezing.

also, maybe try adding corn syrup or something similar to the pb before adding it to the ice cream? if you use my layer technique to keep the pb noticeable (not too mixed in), it will actually freeze solid, so I'm thinking corn syrup will keep it more viscous and gooey like it is out of the jar. Freezing dollops of pb before adding will keep them as hard frozen solid dollops that will not soften when you go to scoop the final ice cream.

Holy crap you are buying this Philly house? This lil dude has been on the market forever! (I've been looking a full year and am settling myself at the end of the month) While I never saw this property in person, have you taken into account costs that might also crop up during the inspection in addition to all the cosmetic stuff you'll be doing? I can tell you from experience with these older homes, even the ones that look to be in good shape may have a few issues that end up being really expensive (my current updated rowhome has about a 20k list, these things add up!)

Not that I want to discourage you, but be really really sure you are ready to take on a large reno. I walked from a similar deal in Rittenhouse sq and ultimately i think it had the potential to turn into an overwhelming money pit. With patience I was able to find a great house on a lovely block that is perfect for me - and I am SO glad I walked away from the other house. I know the Philly market has been a little slow for new quality listings in the last few months, but actually it seems like more listings are starting to pick up, and don't forget, fall is prime time for scoring deals as fewer buyers are out looking.

Good luck, and I hope you are happy with whatever decision you end up making!
