Yikes--this is the most horrible sofa I've ever seen.

I'm in the process of removing the carpet in my apt. to get to the hardwood floors underneath. (BTW, there's something so cathartic about ripping up this beige rental carpet and yanking out the nails and staples left behind. I highly recommend it.) Most of the oak floors are in pretty decent shape, although they will need a coating of polyurethane. However, the floors in the bedroom are more worn, and have a few areas where the floor is worn down to the wood, where the floor looks grey. My question: can I apply a polyurethane coating over these areas, without having the floor sanded? It's a rental, so I'd really prefer to spend as little as possible. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I just love this house. I adore how you've mixed old and newer things, without making the place seem "trendy" in the least. I'm going to try to adopt some of the elements of simplicity that it uses. I especially like the simplicity of the bedroom--such a calming space from what I can see.

Melissa,

Do/would you sell copies of any of these prints? (I couldn't find a way to contact you on your blog.)

I love the colors! And that painting (poster? I can't quite tell) in the kitchen is wonderful! Who is the artist?

I think I might go ahead and decorate my place '90s style, so I'll be ahead of the curve. Wait--my place is already '90s.

I love the color in your place--it looks cheery and like it's been put together over time.

I'd love to know where you got the sheer red curtains for the windows in the living room.

Definitely getting in over my head with repairs. I thought I was lucky to find my affordable apartment when I moved to NYC, especially because I only had a few days to find a place. The place had a nice, renovated kitchen, and I thought it wouldn't be a big deal to paint all the walls--which had been painted with mustard and/or brown paint, mixed with some sort of sand. Doors with cracked paint. Bathroom with only primer. Two years later, and I'm still painting. Also, carpet. I knew I hated it then, and that has only been amplified by living here. Can't wait until this lease is up and I can move! The kitchen's still great, but it doesn't make up for the rest!

I don't have an answer for how to remove the smell. However, your landlord should remove the mothballs because the fumes are toxic, according to the EPA:

I have a question that doesn't address the color at all. In the main photo of the dining room, you can see at the top of the back wall (above the glass doors) an overhang that is a feature of the wall. My pre-war NYC apartment has something similar on some of the walls. What is the name of this feature, and why does it exist? Is it merely aesthetic, or does it cover some electrical wiring or provide some other function? It sure makes it hard to have floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

I agree the colors are yummy. Gives Ikea a run for their money? Not according to the prices on the Habitat website, especially after doing the conversion to dollars.

Do these places pay AT to write posts like this?

Because I'm also opposed to bath rugs, I like the suggestion to get something that can hang over the tub, and then be put down when someone takes a shower. Otherwise, you'll have to put your feet on the teak mat when you use the toilet--that seems awkward to me. Plus, your tiles are really nice.

Could you give the name of the white paint in the living room (on and above the fireplace)? It's a nice shade--doesn't look like a pure white.

Can anyone recommend a nice near-white color that works with NYC light? When I moved into my current apartment, the walls alternated between mustard yellow and poopy brown. I painted the living room a sunny yellow, which I now hate. I then chose Ralph Lauren "Fine Linen" for dining room, and was planning to repaint the living room the same color, but after reading these posts I'm thinking "Fine Linen" probably looks like the dreaded pancake-batter yellow. I don't know if I can stand going through another bad choice on my walls, so I'd appreciate suggestions.
