like kanchana said, this is super duper common in India. In my house it is placed right above the kitchen sink so the maid puts them directly in their place after washing and the water drains back into the sink. No mess solution. I bought an ikea shelf, attached doors to it and use that as a shoe rack. Makes all shoes disappear easily. Most of my friends/guests know to put them inside when they come in.
