Haier portable washer Ikea Frost drying rack. Been doing it this way for about a year now, and it sure does beat the laundromat.

I HATE squirrels. I had a beautiful vegetable container garden on my fire escape a few years ago that was destroyed by the crazy squirrels that gather around my crazy-squirrel-feeding-next-door-neighbor's patio. They are awful. Then, she had the ridiculousness to complain to my landlord about "dirt falling on her patio" from my garden. Hello...?! Maybe if you didn't feed the squirrels, they wouldn't come around her and throw dirt on you?!

Ugh.

This is what I want to know: How has our society accepted squirrels as "OK" rodents?? Everytime I see them, I see a rat. In fact, the other day I saw a squirrel who had lost the hair on its tail and it looked exactly that...a rat.

Gross. Nothing helps...move the container or put some cut-up screen under the dirt. That's the only thing, and even that doesn't work. There are also some squirrel-proof plants, I believe alliums...things in the onion family.

Yeah, post the sign on the neighbor's door but if she's anything like my crazy neighbor, it won't work.

This is a big DC problem that definitely deserves more big-media attention...

Best, cheapest movers by far: Capitol Hill movers. Katherinec mentioned them -- they moved me into my 4th floor apartment rowhouse with skinny stairs in 100 degree humid weather (read: a horrible moving job), and were prompt, nice, fun and CHEAP. Plus, they're doing it for a cool, local cause --to buy Capitol Hill Bookstore. Look them up on Craigslist.

Hi! Thanks for all the nice comments...it's good to get feedback:)

Let's see...the long, skinny counter. I was initially really afraid it would be a waste of space, and actually considered taking it out completely, but after some organizing, I really like it! It comes in handy mostly for food-prep, as a cutting board fits perfectly on it. The rest of the time, it holds only what you see in the picture. If I was planning to stay in the apartment forever, and actually owned it, I'd be pro-tearing down the wall and making a lovely open bar-like space into the living room so it wouldn't be so narrow.

The small stool is made by my grandfather. I keep telling him to patent the idea because its ingenious and cute. I use it all the time and get so many compliments on it.

The houndstooth rug I found on Overstock.com I was a little nervous about it at first -- it's an indoor/outdoor rug, and it was so cheap -- but it is amazing. It's a breeze to clean up crumbs off of, and withstands a lot of wear-and-tear, not to mention looking cute and classy! I can't recommend Overstock more, it's one of my favorites (and I forgot to mention it in my writeup).

Thanks, again!

Bright rug. Lose the striped chair. Open the window & frame it with a ceiling to floor curtain that is bright/your accent color. Move the TV to a different room or wall -- it's competing with the fireplace & adding darkness to the area. Hang up the mirror, don't lean it (if you want more color, paint its frame your accent color). Get rid of at least one piece of furniture -- there's too much crammed into that little space -- I'd start with the black table -- might be nice next to the couch instead of on the wall?

Sorry if anything I say is a repeat...don't have the attention span to read through all the comments.

I really like what you've started with here, though! The room is nice and comforting...all things a guest room should be.

You should maximize the architecture -- what you've already started to do by putting the bed against the raised wall -- the idea to paint that wall as a focus wall is a great one! Perhaps the color that you want to be your accent color - a brown/tan or orange? This is cheap and easy to do, and will definitely make that wall feel less bare. Then, lower the print so that it's closer to the bed and not in the middle of the wall and I think it'll look great.

One other option is those little Ikea wall-mounted lamps that they have in, like every single picture in their catalog. I was a bit turned off by them at first, but bought them for alongside my bed and LOVE the way they look. The shades are glass and they give off a nice glow. Would look nice right underneath the print and might give it a bit more of a "headboardish" look.

Anyway, I like it! And please, don't paint the shelves pink. Yikes!

sorry, but i have to agree with foodefafa.

while i'm sure plenty of laughter goes on, i'm not really finding much that makes me want to gasp in awe here.

yes, you have a great palate to start from, but honestly...i'm pretty unimpressed with what you've done with it :/

This apartment is really well spaced out, and has many nice things in it. But...I think it would be much nicer to look at if the pictures were better taken and well-formatted.

It makes me disappointed, as a resident of the District, and a young, creative professional who hopes to one day soon submit my own house tour, to see house tours with potential, but no great style. Is there no selection process? Or any help for people wanting to photograph their apartments well?

I hope ATDC bloggers get on the ball and help out the people willing to share their apartments with us, so that AT readers don't give up on DC completely...

cute, fun, lots to look at! nice to see that someone from dc has an original sense of themselves and their home!

envious of your ability to have an eat-in kitchen. my apt has a similar layout, but my kitchen is too skinny for anything but some bar stools.

agreed about the need for rugs and the pics about the couch grouped closer. might give your lr a bit more sense of "space."

thanks for sharing!

i can't help but laugh about keep calm poster comments.
the poster isn't horrible, but really, a picture collage over the bed? kind of dorm-roomy.

otherwise, the house is cute...love the front door area.
