i love it! you see so many kids' rooms that don't look as if children live in them, they're so stark and adult. every kid i know would love living in this room.

i guess this is my foray into what will be a lifetime of strangers criticizing my parenting choices. however shall i celebrate?

i know that this setup is safe in our house, and that is really all that matters. there hasn't been so much as a one inch gap between the bed and crib since we set it up. the bed is very firmly against the crib. since this picture was taken, we have also removed the side table, so the crib is bordered by walls on two sides.

as far as bumpers go, i actually sewed the bumper myself so that it would protect his head if he scooched up against it, but that would crumple under his foot if he tried to stand on it. there is no way my child could use the bumper as a stepstool up and out of the crib. it would be much easier for him to leave the bed by crawling over me and jumping off the edge. but guess why that won't happen? because he sleeps four inches from my face and i wake up if his breathing pattern changes in the slightest. statistics show that SIDS is dramatically decreased in co-sleeping families because the parents are so in tune with their children. guess how i know that? because i'm extremely familiar with SIDS co-sleeping safety.

i, too, find it sad that mothers use this opportunity to jump all over each other. really sad.

thanks to all of those who left pleasant comments here and on my flickr.

elle -- none of the things that are in the crib are in the crib when our son goes to sleep. the crib only has a sheet on it when he's sleeping. when he's a year old, we'll add the bumper, pillow, and cover. thanks for worrying about his safety, albeit a tad condescendingly!

it's a great room but i have to confess that i laughed out loud when i read her profession. as a cookbook author, i assure you that there's no way a cookbook author could afford that furniture. maybe the absentee father paid for the room before he split!

everyone has had great advice, the only things i would add:

- when you call and leave a message scheduling your visit, be sure to say exactly what your plan is -- and then stick to it. if you just want to stay long enough to drop off food and glance at sleeping baby, do it and be in and out in five minutes.

- don't expect to hold the baby. newborns sleep 18-23 hours a day.

- even if you scheduled a time to come by before the birth, or got the okay to come by "anytime," you should still call and make sure it's still okay. your friend might not have known how tired she would be.

but mostly, don't get your feelings hurt if your calls aren't returned immediately! you're eager to see the little one ...but so is everyone else in their lives. and the needs of their little family are more important than yours right now.

i would say that, unless you're seriously lacking storage, save even more money by skipping the changing table and just using the top of the dresser to change the baby (with a changing pad, of course). they make great changing tables.

if you need even more storage space, buy a couple of those under-the-bed boxes to storage under the crib.

congratulations! what a wonderful surprise for your wife.

so what we've learned is that there is an incredibly small window where it's safe to use this entire set, and the set costs $350-390?! who spends that kind of money for something that is so short-lived? that's like dropping $350 on a dress that you can only wear once, and i don't personally know any parent (especially those still living in apartments) willing to waste that kind of money. i mean, they're cute but COME ON.

i have these. they were a gift. i never ever use them as measuring spoons because i never think to look on my fridge for measuring spoons, and also because of the ick factor, which is inexplicable -- why would they be MORE exposed to germs than, say, my microplane, which also hangs in my kitchen, or my other measuring spoons, which sit in a drawer? still: ick. they remain magnets only, and i woudn't have bought them for myself and wouldn't buy them for someone else. some things should stay single purpose.
