Your kitchen is awesome! I love the fusion of rustic, farmhouse elements with modern elements. It feels like a kitchen with culture and with modern sensibilities.

Jealousy does not look good on anyone, people.

I suppose I am going to try to take the positive spin on this and say that this forum is a working example of freedom of speech, but how dare anybody use such defamatory words directed towards not only a mother but her children. This blog is meant to be a community gathering space for people who enjoy and appreciate design. They are opening up their home to us as a courtesy. Respect that. Even if you have differing taste, fashion sense, or design aesthetic, respect that. Clearly these are cultured people with a particular quirkiness and expression and are not brazenly ignorant, uninformed people. They are using their space as an extension of their irreverence, sense of humor, AND cultural and spiritual livelihood. These aspects of one's life can coincide and don't have to be separate. The people who don't understand this are the brazenly ignorant ones who need to get a clue and understand what art can represent. Some of these comments truly saddened me. I expect to see random trashy comments like this on a youtube forum or something, but come on people, we can do better than this.

Leah, I'm truly sorry that you were subjected to some of the words that have been directed towards you and your family, but you clearly have the right mindset about what your beautiful home represents and I thank you for allowing us to experience it!

Gorgeous space guys. Just from the pictures, you get a sense that your home really does express both of you as individuals. You somehow managed to effectively mix vintage, modern, and touches of industrial aesthetics. Well done!

Agreed, defintely happy to hear that was a staged unit. The first thing I thought was "where are you supposed to cook with all that beautiful furniture?" The space was so incredibly perfect and immaculate I wouldn't even want to cook in that kitchen for fear of causing a mess in there.

I feel like I just took a stroll through a museum. A gorgeous, over the top, high fashion museum. The space truly is striking and calls for one's full attention. It is not my style at all, but you would have to be a fool not to appreciate that apartment. Kudos to you Maria for executing such a bold vision.

Well done Karen. I love the blending of the warm and cold textures and tones. The warmness of the woods and the more modern, cool appeal of the stained concrete are very eye catching. I do agree with other comments though, the kitchen does feel oddly medical, borderline too sterile. But it is a very unique, beautiful space overall.

I grew up in a small, rural, logger town of 15,000 people and fled as quickly as I could to a large city. I have since wandered and found myself in several large, dense cities. I once rebelled against the country mouse mentality because I thought I had to be different and more exciting than that. Since "finding" myself in the dense city living, I was surprised to find that I really am a country mouse at heart, but I prefer the endless celebration of diversity that one typically finds in city living. So I have come to negotiate these two and find that my utopia is a city that feels connected to the natural world. Where forest, trails, ocean, and mountains are all easily accessible and within reach to maintain that calming inner serenity that can be difficult to come by in the sometimes stressful city life.

Which Is Your Utopia?
